It's not uncommon for there to be a story behind the story. Is there astory behind�Freebird?
�
The story of�Freebird�is a story within itself. There was actually an earlier version I completed about eight years ago. I shopped it to publishers and fortunately got nowhere with it.�
�
Fortunately?�
�
Yes, a lot happened in the years that followed that influenced the book. Somewhere in there I started a near daily prayer. I asked God for vision and provision. I wanted to know what to do--vision--and have the resources to do it--provision. The vision prayer was answered. I gained focus I didn't have before. That motivated me to do the hard work of reworking the manuscript. The answer to the request for provision led to an adventure I didn't expect.�

How so?�
�
This will sound disconnected--and even I didn't connect the dots atfirst--but a few years back my wife and I decided to take a calculated risk. We purchased a distressed house, fixed it up, and flipped it. Nobody was more surprised than me that it actually worked. That first house has led to several others, and we now pretty much always have a house or two in progress.�
�
Sounds like an adventure! How did that impact�Freebird?�
�
The impact was critical. The world of publishing has changed a great deal in recent years. House flipping gave the provision to put the pedal to the floor and do things a traditional publisher wouldn't typically do. It truly has been provision for the vision.�

No doubt this also gave an- other opportunity to see how your spirituallife inter- sects with your work life.�
�
That's an understatement. When you're truly engaged in business, it's a spiritual experience. I truly believe that. I leaned on this adventure when crafting the characters of Tyler and Ned.�

Speaking of Tyler and Ned, are either of them you? Or did you model ei-ther of them after anyone you know?�

Interesting thing about Tyler and Ned is that they're actually a lot alike. They're of different generations, and are at different places on theirspiritual journeys, but they're both no non-sense people, they're both entrepreneurs, and they're both seekers of genuine life. So I hope I'm found in both characters, but I didn't model them after any one person. They're composites.

What is it about work, specifically, that motivated you to address it inthe context of our spiritual lives?�
�
We live in a culture where we run ourselves ragged with work. Both individuals and families are hurt by this. Unlike other things that hurt us, though, we can't say, "That's hurting me, so I'll quit doing it." We need our jobs and even like our jobs. I'm convinced matters of faith and spirituality have a great deal to say toward this.�
�
You're a pastor, though, so of course matters of faith have a great dealto say about your work. What got you thinking about how faith and spiritualityimpact other vocations?�
�
Yes, I'm a pastor, but I haven't always been, and it's not even the totality of what I do today. Years ago I was in sales for a technology company. The Internet was just making it's debut, and the world was trying to figure out how to make the most of it's possibilities. I discovered very quickly how vital my spiritual life was to my work life. When you're pitching a service to Fortune 500 companies, making presentations to leaders and decision makers, and when you're counting on commissions for your livelihood--all in the midst of astart-up environment--you find yourself praying a lot.�

What do you do for fun?�
�
For 10 years we lived in Austin and took full advantage of the lakes there. Recently, we moved to Chicago and are now looking to enjoy Summertime boating. Not sure how we'll handle the winter!�

I expected you to say golf.�
�
I enjoy golf but don't get to play near enough. Both Tyler and Ned playfar better than me.�

After reading Freebird I had two strong thoughts--this is a great story that draws you in, and it's full of real-life wisdom our workplace desperately needs. Rick draws you into a group of work-world friends, meeting in a bar to share the typical struggles of life and work, when one friend takes a dare that leads him on an intriguing socratic discovery. Through cat and mouse dialogue during a round of golf, Freebird weaves the wisdom of Solomon into issues of work stress, purpose, and finding pleasure in what you do. Read through the last half because the practical wisdom goes deeper on the back nine! Great read and a lot to ponder.

Well-written and Liberating!

As a person in the employment business (I've owned an executive search firm for 14 years.), I've read numerous books on this subject. I put "Freebird" toward the very top of that list.

It was such an easy, flowing read. I'm a slow reader by nature and if I finish a book in two or three weeks, I consider it a big accomplishment. I finished this book in two days. I just didn't want to put it down.

Not only have I already recommended it to many, I personally got a ton of value out of it. In a very healthy way, this book has revealed just how much I rely on myself and how little I rely (trust) God for my "protection." Since my faith is a primary part of my life, I am sincerely grateful to have this blind side exposed.

Thank you, Rick Shurtz, for such a well-written and liberating book!

I Couldn't Put It Down

Read the book in three days. Couldn't put it down. The day I started reading it I had lunch with someone who was struggling with work and what to do with his life. I already had someone to give it to before I finished the first chapter. Perfect timing. Great insight. Awesome book.

I had my apprehensions when first asked to review Ho Tactics: How to MindF**k A Man into Spending, Spoiling, and Sponsoring, but I will be the first to admit my curiosity was sparked by the title. This book is as good as it is dangerous, and I found it to be extremely good, which makes it extremely dangerous.

The author delves first into the psychology of men from the point of view of a man, openly admitting that the male species does have certain soft spots that any woman can exploit. As I poured myself a glass of wine, I let the earlier chapters linger.

As a happily married woman, I have no need for Tactics, but as I sat back down to read, I found out that I was being na�ve. By the time I finished the chapters on flirting, phone sex, and asking for gifts in the proper way, I was on my second glass of wine and thinking of trying these things on my husband (just a smudge) to see if it would net a better birthday gift this year.

The second part of the book builds on the first twelve chapters and signals an advanced stage where those women who don t mind going the extra mile sexually can master things like online dating and my personal favorite, The Kardashian Effect. Through it all, the author G.L. Lambert makes this a highly entertaining read even for us non-Hos, with his pop-culture infused sense of humor and sleek use of analogies that helped even a non-hip woman such as me keep up with the steps.

My only negative take away was that, while it does preach about the ills of this lifestyle, it does serve it up as a huge temptation. The chapter on going from Ho to Housewife I fear could influence younger women to take up this charge. With that said, I did learn something, which in itself blew away my expectations (while putting a smile on my husband's face).

I highly recommend Ho Tactics, but only to those women over 21 years of age, I figure that you should be of drinking age before you come of Hoing age. --Urban League Digest

AMAZING book, expect one brief but horrible tactic.

Ok heres the thing at first i LOVED this book. i felt like i was holding Gold in my hands. my new bible. But then the author suggests to women lying about sexual trauma as a tactic to avoid having to have sex. Please girls NEVER lie about that. if that wasnt in the book i would give it a 5 star rating hands down. But maybe since the author is a man he doesn't understand the ramification of women lying about this. It is very hard for women who have been raped and molested to be taking seriously much of the time. Even though a TINY percentage of women who report these to police it end up being fake. but to lie about that to anyone a trick a friend a sugar ANYONE is just not ok, and makes it harder for women who have been and have these issues to be taken seriously. I am really dispointed anyone would give that advice to girls no matter what thier objective is. The rest of the boo is Gold thats why i gave it two stars and not one. but that is a REALLLYYYYYY big bad red flag no no do NOT do ever!!!

DON'T F**K ANOTHER MAN UNTIL YOU'VE READ THIS BOOK FROM COVER TO COVER!!! SERIOUSLY! DON'T EVEN TALK TO A MAN!

PLEASE DO NOT LET THE TITLE DETOUR YOU. This is absolutely a MUST READ for every woman whether she is looking to 'come up' or actually wants to understand the mind of a man and use that to her advantage in attaining a real relationship. He literally breaks it down for you, step by step, with examples, of what you should do and where a man's mind is at in that moment. He tells you things that men do to play you out of your p***y and help you to not be a victim to men and their games but to actually use it to your advantage and take control. It's not a blow by blow (PUN INTENDED) of what to do to please a man, it actually uses the first half to explain how to get what you want WITHOUT screwing. It's a great read but also a study guide. It will have you wanting to read it fast and slow at the same time. It's a page turner that's meant to be studied and practiced. Amazingly, the first thing mentioned is that you must get your confidence up, for real. Women, this isn't a book for the meek, timid, insecure or can't-tell-them-nothing type chicas. This is for those ladies that are confident, smart, business minded or at least trying to get there, who are ready to take these tactics and apply them in full and in order, to get what they want. My only problem with this book, is I wished I had it when I was 15 years old.
Ladies, stop giving it up because you feel a tingle when he's near or he says sweet things or has beautiful dark skin and light eyes. STOP IT NOW!!! DON'T SCREW ANOTHER MAN BEFORE YOU READ THIS BOOK! It also works for men already in your life, ex's and men you've slipped up and had sex with already. He'll cover these situations that may seemed lost in the second half of the book. It was so good, I bought a second one for my bestie! You will want to share this with women you care about in your life but not YOUR actual copy! GET IT and get it!!!!

Learn to Become a Master Manipulator for Ca$h

This is NOT a book about how to land a husband. Your ultimate goal is to become the companion of a wealthy "sponsor" who will provide you with housing, clothing, a car, vacations, money to start a business or whatever else you need fiancially, in return for fulfilling his need to take care of a prized possession. Sex is something doled out rarely, if at all. If you give up the goodies too soon, he will walk away and you will feel like a cheap lay (because you are). I would have been skeptical about the reality of achieving this type of relationship, but a good friend has a multi-billionaire sponsor that (much to my and my friends' incredulity) does NOT sleep with her - ever. A misconception about having a sugar daddy is that they want sex. No, they want to know they "own" you. My friend's sponsor expects her to be at his beck and call at all hours to take care of the personal details of his life, fly with him all over California for business and to make his old cronies jealous, and never, ever tell him "No." So she plays the helpless little girl (even though she's a couple decades younger, but still nearly 40) who runs certain aspects of his life, and he plays the beneficient father figure. He dresses her in designer clothes (Chanel, Gucci, Celine), pays her 2 kids' tuition at private school, buys her "toys" like an iMac, and has bought her not one but 2 cars - a 2015 Mercedes SUV this past Christmas and a Mini Cooper for her nanny. Swear to God. Oh, and he's married, so she gets a break when he has to spend time with the Mrs. I couldn't figure out how she did it, and what exactly made their relationship "tick." Now I know - this book tells you how.

It's a fast read, full of details like the literal words to say when you meet a potential trick/treat/sponsor in person or online. The writing is no-nonsense and full of real-life examples. Even if you decide you don't want to be a Ho, there is alot of useful information on how to be a more assertive woman generally and stop settling for broke guys who want to sleep with you in exchange for zero effort. So despite the title, it's actually an excellent book about female empowerment.

Twist and turns enough to satisfy

This was a well developed story that was fairly believable for the time period. The characters were portrayed fairly well, although because of the circumstance a bit OOC. There were quite a few twists and turns that varied from the original, but they were interesting and entertaining.

The reason I gave it four stars instead of five was that I felt the emotional voice of the main players lacked the kind of intensity that I prefer. Angst should make me cry and passion should thrill me. In this area I believe it fell flat.

Would I reccomend it? Yes I would. It is definitely a very pleasant read.

A Slightly Disappointing Darcy

Nothing very memorable. Not the Darcy I am used to since he so willingly married his cousin prior to the stories beginning, and I found that so out of his character from the original. I did not expect to see him bend to family duty and expectations as he did by marrying Anne. Be ready for the deaths of two of the central figures in the story. It was not something that I found really exciting, nothing unexpected, and nothing excitingly new. It was so easy to skip over the ideas just regurgitated from the main story. When I read what ifs and alternative, I expect deviation from the original not a few new things thrown in but the majority following the same major events in the story. I seem to enjoy more those stories that keep the characters as their personalities are in the original but have major alterations to the events in the story; i.e., no Hunsford proposal, no Lydia-Wickham elopement, etc. This just did not live up to my expectations, and I was happy when the story had ended.

A few deaths force this story's characters to take on more sober decisions

As I began reading this story my thoughts were, "canon, canon, canon" so my expectations were set low. Yes, Darcy's circumstances are different initially as you may have read in the book description on Amazon. He has met family expectations and married Anne...but he is now a widower with a young daughter and plans to marry to give her a mother and to gain an heir. Upon again meeting his friend, Bingley, in London, he ponders if Bingley's sister, Caroline, might meet all his requirements for a wife. (Oh, dear) And when Bingley invites Darcy to accompany him to his newly rented estate, Longbourn, in Hertfordshire, he decides that time spent there in the company of Caroline will allow him to observe her in closer and more intimate circumstances than the usual balls and private dinner parties of the ton allow. So off they go and now the tale, as told in canon comes into play.

What dismayed me in this tale is the repeated offing of certain beloved characters. Not that we have come to love Anne that much, but in this tale she is a mother, she has married Darcy and he tells of certain traits that he appreciated…one being her love of reading. (Sound like anyone else we know?) The Netherfield Ball comes about, the departure of its inhabitants to London occurs, (*pause in canon: a death occurs,) the trip to Hunsford happens, and again our actors come together. A proposal is set forth and the bitterness assigned to one’s interference has its affect. Elizabeth returns to Longbourn and again we read of tragedy. Now the story has some significant twists and as few authors have done, our main players finds themselves reacquainted in London but with a much different set of circumstances and needs for each.

Lady Catherine has her stage much like canon, Georgiana finds Elizabeth becoming a dear friend, Bingley meets Elizabeth and learns of her family’s present state of affairs, and Elizabeth must make adjustments in her style of addressing those she meets due to her life decisions. Darcy, oh, our dear Darcy – well, he is fighting a losing battle but has to not only tamp down his desires but also to act in an entirely different manner to preserve reputations. (And I am not referring to Lydia here, although Lydia remains Lydia.)

By the end of the novel I was sobbing. So the tale did spin into a dear story of ODC and we do have a happy ending, especially in the telling about the family in the epilogue. I did enjoy this story and read it in one afternoon.

Zines (as in magazines), are a righteous, radical form of creative self-expression. There are no hard-and-fast standards for zines, but they may contain one or more of the following: newsletters, journals, comic strips, artwork, photography, collage, poetry, and/or scrapbooks. This delightful book gives a quick history of zines before sharing ideas, resources, and examples of some of the better zines available at the time. Of course zines, as everything, have come a long way since the book was published and whether you are planning on a printed zine or want to do one on the internet, there is a wealth of ideas contained in this one book that should keep any zine creator busy. Whether familiar with zines or new to the zine scene, this is a must have for your collection!

Contagious enthusiasm!

I attended a talk by the author of this book and instantly thought I needed to buy it. I was right. Bea Uusma is delightfully passionate about the Andr�e expedition; a failed polar venture of the 19th century. And believe me, she will drag you into it too. You should let her. It's fascinating.

Immediately after finishing this (all in one day, as it was nigh impossible to pull away from) I handed it off to the next person I laid eyes on just so I would have someone to talk to about it. It’s that good. If I could give it six stars, I would.

A love story in every sense of the word: mysterious, unavoidable, and timeless!

I've never written anything on here before, because, frankly, I've never been compelled to. But after putting the finishing touches on "The Expedition" last night, I wanted to do my part in spreading the word of this gem of a tale.

I happened upon this book in large part due to its cover. It is beautiful, yet haunting; both a cry for help and a calm reassurance. The cover alone isn't worthy of our continued devotion though, the promise of love however, in my opinion, is. "The Expedition," for all its priceless imagery, unwavering investigation, and compelling mystery, is, at its core, a story of love. And if it does sweet justice to any one virtue, if not all, it is the ever-illusive love.

After having spent the last year of my life in northwestern Greenland, I understand - to some, small degree (as much as the comforts of modern technology allow) - the struggles of the Arctic, those that captivate the reader in this mystery throughout. Ms. Uusma does a fine job narrating a rather, evasively complex experience. Her commitment to truth is uncompromising. Although faced with great adversity in uncovering something many have given up on, she stops at nothing to ensure the reader has a luxury rarely afforded in journalistic pieces: all the facts. She allows no assumptions. Refuses the acceptance of half-truths or prevailing theories. She looks under every rock, into every cranny (literally and metaphorically). Her communion with the past is a rare achievement!

In the end, instead of being told how to think, she affords the reader the opportunity to relive the investigation for themselves. "How did they die?" is important. But this multilayered tale is much more than that. What they lived for is the matter at hand. If you look far enough, just as Uusma did, you'll find out.

Just like love, this book is imperfect. It leaves some things to be desired. It can be choppy and incomplete. I guarantee you, you'll wish some things were done differently. But what great works don't? And with that in mind, if given a chance, you'll be captivated by what is an honest reflection of our humanity and the struggles we face when we aspire to more.

Purchase or borrow. Enjoy. In the end it will have been worth it!

Stupid expedition, very fine book!

Artist Bea Uusma was bored on a feast and stole a book about the Andr�e expedition. Andr�e had the idea of flying with a hydrogen balloon to the North Pole. Bea became fascinated, and studied medicine beccause she wanted to solve the mystery of why all three of the expedition died. She hate to freeze but visit the Arctic region (including the North Pole) many times. Andr�e`s expedition must have been the most stupidly organized expedition ever and its members death on an isolated arctic island the result of it. But efter reading this book, you become as fascinated as Bea Uusma!
The book is also printed in a larger edition (only in Swedish) with more pictures.

Not to be Ignored

Although the culture has persisted for decades, Dr. Nick Pappas deserves kudos for bringing the deviant behavior that exists among many athletes to the attention of the unknowing. While there have been articles and investigations into such practices in the past, nothing compares to the comprehensive insight - and disturbing findings - that Pappas provides in his book.

Dr. Pappas has done his homework, with almost 150 interviews with athletes from a wide variety of sports. If you have a child who participates in sports at any level, this is a must read. The stories told within the book definitely show a dark side to sports that for too long has been ignored.

The Dark Side of Sports reveals important information that colleges and professional sports franchises would rather be kept quiet: Elite athletes, most of whom have been pampered and spoiled most of their lives, sometimes end up sexually assaulting women because they think they are entitled to do so. The author, Nick Pappas, is in the position to know this subject. A former college and professional hockey player who earned a doctorate degree, Pappas worked on this book for nearly 10 years and interviewed hundreds of athletes from all of the major sports. We can only hope that a lot of people will read this book and that it leads to changes in the way we treat these athletes - and their victims.

Dr. Pappas has done a great job with his book, The Dark Side of Sports, and is doing a real public service by exposing the shocking and disturbing sexual culture of collegiate and professional athletes. I hope it brings light to the dark side of the underbelly of sports.
