Nice curriculum but know the needs of your student

I bought this for my 6th grader. He has had no chemistry prior to this, but I think it is a little too young for him in presentation. We like the concepts it teaches. It seems to cover the important beginning aspects of chemistry like chemical bonds and the periodic table. However, he needs and wants more difficulty and content for each lesson, as it seems too simplified for him. He is a critical thinker and needs more information. The text also seems rather juvenile as the font is a larger font and looks more like a 3rd grade workbook. I think it would be perfect for a struggling learner or a reluctant chemist. My 4th grader struggles with comprehension and focus and I think this will fit the bill for him next school year. The instructions are easy to understanď and can be done by the student him/herself.

This is a great book for my struggling learner

This book is exactly what we were looking for my struggling learner (due to a learning challenge). She used the other three in the last three years of school, and is able to grasp the concepts, and retain the information better from these books than others we have tried, nor does it intimidate her, even though it is a thick book. She likes the art pages, and the question and answer quiz at the end of the chapter for review. We also go to the library and find a book on the subject presented in the chapter for her to read for pleasure to back up what she has learned in the chapter, and try to do an experiment for practical aplication, either from the book suggestion, or one we find on our own :)

Affordable, easy to use

I purchased this book for my 10 year old daughter because she was interested in learning chemistry. This is a great introductory course in chemistry with easy hands-on projects and short, manageable chapters. It is thorough enough for the curious upper elementary aged child, but not overwhelming. It is not an in-depth high school chemistry course, but if your child is not science oriented, it might be just the thing for her. There is no separate workbook or teacher's manual, which makes this an affordable, student-directed course. References to a Christian worldview are peppered throughout, helping the student to see God's Hand even in the smallest particles.

The Good 'n Bad

The Good:

Compared to the other How to Draw Manga series, I would say this book was a summary of every book in the series. With multiple artists and varying styles, it offers a beginning artist a definite edge and foundation for drawing manga. Not only does it show a more stylized version of manga, and also shows a more realistic version. This was one of the more useful books for head angles. The heads are a variety of , high, low, and side angles. This is very useful for a beginning artist so that their work doesn't look dull or monotonous.

The Bad:

I somewhat felt a little ripped off when I saw the price for such a small book. Also, it seems as if this book doesn't go deeply into each specific section. It's more of a 'general' help book. For instance, if you want to know more about anatomy, I recommend buying the 'Bodies and Anatomy' book in the How To Draw Manga series. This book is more of a 'overall' book.

In conclusion, I'd recommend buying this book if I was a beginner or intermediate. You can always improve as an artist. Hope you found this helpful.

Perfect For Begginer Manga Artist

This was my very firt book my daddy bought me and let me tell you, he made a smart decision on buying How To Draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons! This book is great for the basics of Manga.

My personal favorite was the deep detail the author went into when drawing the head. I also liked how the author clearly showed the differences on age of the child, protagonist, younger adult, mother, and an elder.

I would recommend this book to all ages, only one page with minor, let me repeat, MINOR nudity. Overall, this was a pretty great book.

it's alright

okay this is my first review ever so hang in there with me alright? Now I purchesed this book "How to Draw Manga: Ultimate Lessons vol. 1" mainly because I like the other HtDM books and I wanted to see what this had to offer me. When the book came I was expecting it to be as big as the other HtDM books. Boy was I wrong! it was as thick as the others but the hight and with were 'shorter' none the less the content of the book itself prooved to be of some help. The book itself starts off with the begining mini comic or 'manga' if you will then the table of contents, and then the actual material. The first chapter is all about the basics, starting with "practice by starting with copying" then it moves onto how to go and create your own charatures by showing you the basics of drawing (start with a rough general outline of blah blah blah then refine it and add detale blah blah blah). First they start with the head and face the move down to the torso, arms, and legs. In the book they also show examples of expressing emotions, depicting 'cool action poses', a little bit of sceanery, and how to properly hold your drawing tools. IN the book itself it says these are the goals it's trying to teach you:

1) The Basics of Faces

2) Basics of Figures

3) The ABC's of Tools ans Materials

4) Basic Background and Special Effect Techniques

and

5) Producing and Original Draft of Manga

In all it's a pretty helpful book; however it'll do you jack if you don't put it to use.. in other words keep on drawing. The book is only there to help you get ideas on how you may want it to look. It's not going to do it for you, or magically you'll be able to draw "manga" the instant after you read it.

Now I gave it 4 stars because for some reason I felt that it was lacking a little something in it.. other then that it's a great refference book for anyone, not just people who want to draw manga/anime, who wants to improve their drawing technique.

The Best of the Star Wars Canon So Far

I’ll be honest, ever since Lucasfilm decided to set a “new precedent” for their Star Wars literature, relabeling the old as Legends and introducing the new as official canon, I haven’t been a huge fan of the books that have followed. Sure, some of them were okay, my favorites being A New Dawn, Aftermath, and Lost Stars. But I’ve waffled on which I liked more. While they were good, none of them really stood out as being my clear favorite. Well that is no longer the case.

Bloodline is now, by far, my favorite Star Wars book in the canon, ranking as high as some of my absolute favorite books from the old Expanded Universe, now Legends. And that’s saying a lot. While I won’t dive into spoilers in this review, here are some of my thoughts to get started with.

First of all, let’s talk politics, because the book certainly does . The Force Awakens had almost nothing to tell us about the political landscape of the universe, even less than we saw in the original trilogy. At least then we knew there was an Empire, an Emperor, a Senate that had been recently dissolved, etc. Bloodline takes place 6 years before The Force Awakens and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the state of the galaxy prior to the events of the film. Now, the funny thing about politics is that it’s become almost something of a dirty word among some Star Wars fans, due largely to the backlash of the politically-charged prequel films. Fortunately, one of the best mediums to present politics is in book form; we can get inside the heads of the characters, and suddenly it becomes a game we can participate in. Bloodline does this to perfection, and I might add that students of early United States politics might find some of the political arguments familiar.

But let’s move away from that and talk about characters. Princess Leia is the primary protagonist of the book, and Gray hit the nail right on the head. Everything about Leia, from her political views, to her pessimistic and impatient demeanor, to her relationships with other characters, represents realistic growth for her character from when we saw her in Return of the Jedi. Other characters, though not given the same spotlight as Leia, are quite interesting. Gray is able to present likable characters despite completely different viewpoints. Gray’s last Star Wars book, Lost Stars, did something similar by having the two main characters take opposite sides of the war between the Rebellion and the Empire. Both were likable, relatable, but still had completely opposing views. Perhaps the most likable character in Bloodline, besides Leia herself, was a senator who existed on the opposite side of the political spectrum from the princess.

Lastly, if you’re a chronology fan like myself, you will find this book fascinating. The book is full of clues and events that will inform your viewing of The Force Awakens. Since these events are considered canon, we can rely on their accuracy. I won’t spoil anything here, but I promise that this book will change the dialogue that fans have about The Force Awakens, in a big way. It answers questions.

Bloodline is literary gold even outside of the Star Wars universe. It’s one of the best science fiction books I have read. Bloodline makes you think, it makes you cry, it makes you want to jump up and down in fanboy/girl glee. The only thing it won’t do is make you stop reading. So the remaining question is: why are you still reading this review and not reading Bloodline?

The "new canon" finally finds substance...

The nebulous political landscape of Episode VII is finally detailed in Gray's second Star Wars novel, Bloodline. We learn more about the New Republic's politics, the failings of the Senate which was only briefly mentioned in the Force Awakens novelization, and we finally get to see how Leia's character in the "new canon" differs from her Legends counterpart.

Claudia Gray's first young adult SW novel, Lost Stars, was a surprise hit. Fans were ravenous for more and she delivers with Bloodline. While this book is very heavy with the politics, Gray manages to make it interesting with her deft writing and handling of them rather than tedious. There's plenty of action and humorous moments as well, Bloodline feels like a Star Wars adventure.

I felt Leia was criminally underused in Episode VII, however I was unsure if she could be a strong character in her own solo novel. I was mistaken, the tight character focus on Leia was excellent. Gray weaves together some other multidimensional supporting characters but this book is all about Leia. She's jaded, having lost faith in the New Republic and we see her struggling to find her place in the galaxy. Her relationship with Han and Ben is lightly explorered, but best of all we see Leia as she was in the original trilogy. In action, taking charge, journeying around the Galaxy. Leia is struggling with her heritage, both as Vader's daughter and princess of the destroyed Alderaan... struggling to reconcile these roles.

I'd highly recommend reading Bloodline, especially if you plan on seeing Episode VIII. No doubt some elements will play into the film as the director, Rian Johnson, contributed to the novel.

No Lost Stars

I had pretty high expectations for this book after reading Claudia Grey's last Star Wars book Lost Stars (which was great). I have to say I was dissapointed. It was good but lacked. Idk it may be my imaginary but It was hard for me to picture what she was describing at times. She definitely took too much time describing outfits. However I would still recommend it. But if you expected it to set up a lot of the first order and resistance then you will be dissapointed too.

The Beginning of an Excellent New Trilogy

When I first saw that Mark Lawrence was releasing a new trilogy of books in the same world as the Broken Empire Trilogy but in a previously unseen area with all new characters, I wasn't 100% sold on the idea as I really enjoyed Jorg in the first series. However, after spending a couple of chapters with the new viewpoint character, the Vagabond Prince Jalan and his counter-part the Honorable Viking Snorri, I was all in with this series. Jalan is the youngest son of the youngest song of the infamous Red Queen, and he's so far down the line of succession that he can spend all of his time drinking, gambling, and seducing all of the women at court. At the beginning of the book, he's had a series of bad bets and is heavily in debt to the wrong person, and decides to bring the impressive Viking slave, who had just won his freedom by giving an account of the movements of the Red Queen's enemies, to the underground fighting ring as repayment. What followed was a horrible series of events, where the two of them broke the trap set by the Silent Sister (the Red Queen's secret magical advisor) for a Powerful Undead Agent hiding in plain sight, mistakenly letting it escape while entwining the two souls of Jalan and Snorri together with opposing forces of light and darkness. This is the beginning of an epic journey where they attempt to undo the spell while gaining vengeance on the people that killed Snorri's family and his entire village.

I had a lot of fun with this book, and I honestly think that Prince of Fools is an great introduction to Mark Lawrence's excellent writing, perhaps better than Prince of Thorns. The viewpoint character of Jalan is much more likeable than Jorg, especially on the outset, and even though he can be a coward, he also shows a lot of heroic tendencies. I also loved the interplay between Jalan and Snorri, which was incredibly entertaining and reminded me of a classic buddy cop pairing, but with swords/axes and sorcery instead of guns and mustaches. I would recommend this book and the whole series to any fan of Fantasy, and I think it could be a good intro to Fantasy to a reader that's new to it, as Lawrence really knows how to turn a phrase. His writing is definitely well above average for the Fantasy World of Books, and this book and series cemented him as one of my favorite authors.

Another winner from Lawrence

Honorous Jorg Ancr...wait...this isn't about Jorg. Immediately upon the reveal of the title Prince of Fools, comparisons were drawn between it and Mark Lawrence's debut, Prince of Thorns. Doubts were cast as to whether Lawrence could write a non-Jorg character or not. Both of them have prince in the title and both feature an eponymous young prince. Surely they must be the same, right? Wrong. The prince in Lawrence's second series is Jalan Kendeth of the Red March, tenth in line to the throne of his grandmother, the Red Queen. Jalan and Jorg are nothing alike. Where Jorg was an ambitious teenager out for vengeance - and willing to commit all manner of horrors to fulfill his ambition - Jalan is content with boozing, gambling, and womanizing. He's a man with no ambition of his own, a coward and a lair.

The Red Queen is guided by the unseen (except for few, Jalan included) Silent Sister, and she sees a war looming - an army of undead creatures is on the doorstep of the Red March. Jalan, in his content-with-the-world nature, refuses to believe the rumors, as if doing so would make them untrue. Eventually the truth is forced upon him, and Jalan finds himself attached - bonded even, through dark magic - to Snorri ver Snagason, a massive warrior from the frozen north. Jalan's cowardly nature has him riding the coattails of Snorri toward the Norseman's homeland with the hope of breaking the spell that binds them.

Jalan's character contrasts so starkly with Jorg's that it took me a while to get used to Jalan running from any and every conflict he encounters. Where Jorg's psychotic tendencies were utterly fascinating to read about, Jalan's character takes some time but becomes endearing rather quickly in the grand scheme of things. He's a very likable character. Despite being a self-proclaimed coward, he continually shows courageous tendencies, as the hulking Snorri likes to remind him. It's as the late, great, David Gemmell wrote in Legend: "By nature of definition only the coward is capable of the highest heroism." Jalan's denial of his courage is a trademark of Prince of Fools, and it goes hand in hand with the other big theme we're presented with - friendship.

Snorri ver Snagason is not your average lumbering Viking. He's not G.R.R.M.'s The Mountain. He's a surprisingly learned individual and is absolutely more than meets the eye. People jokingly wondered whether Lawrence was capable of writing characters who weren't despicable in some way. Prince of Fools has their answer. Lawrence's beautifully vivid but concise prose does wonders to bring to life the dynamic duo of Jalan and Snorri as their friendship develops throughout the story, and it's actually kind of heartwarming.

Prince of Fools, while not strictly as outright dark as Lawrence's Broken Empire trilogy, still contains its fair share of horror (and humor to boot). Creatures known as the Unborn are sent by the Dead King for whatever purpose he desires, and they are significantly more threatening than your average moaning, BRAAIINS-hungry zombie. The horror and darkness that are inherently embedded in the world of the Broken Empire are countered by the witty humor that is created when Jalan and Snorri are together. It's a perfect blend. Prince, King, and Emperor of Thorns all left me emotionally drained. This newest work is equally compelling, but in a different, not-so-draining way.

Fans of Lawrence's debut trilogy need fear nothing when it comes to whether they'll enjoy Prince of Fools or not. There's no slump here. New readers stumbling across Lawrence may find this as an easier entry point than Prince of Thorns, and they certainly can, but the effectiveness of the brief but awesome encounter with Jorg and his Brothers will be lost.

Prince of Fools is a powerful tale of friendship and courage in a broken world, and it effectively cements Mark Lawrence on my list of favorite authors (a prestigious place to be, I assure you).

Swords and Sorcery + 'The Builders' = Compelling but laughable

Nice, quick read with the steady pace and dark humor that may help one to forget that nothing about this story makes any sense at all. When reading the Broken Empire novels, I had a hard time putting the post-apocalyptic Earth setting into perspective. These books are also set in the same place and time - nice to see Jorg up to no good at one point of this book. For me, it is too absurd of a jump between train tunnels and mannequins to necromancy and magic chunks of rock. The futuristic, interwoven Norse and Christian themes... it just doesn't make sense. Regardless, I liked the underlying story and will add the next to my growing list of trilogies to juggle.

There are certain areas of the book I found interesting and others not so much. I was particularly interested in the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus. I am interested in anything concerning nous. This book was really a mixed bag concerning the personal opinions of the author. I found myself not agreeing with his opinions all the time, but that is the way in philosophies. We exchange ideas and learn.

Amazing book! I think this is my new favorite addition to my bookshelf.. A lot of the stuff in this book is hard for us to agree with because most of us think with our ego, but if you can recognize truth when you see it this book is full of it.
