Having lived in Germany for five years I found this book extremely helpful. You can look up the area you may need information on and "voila" there is the picture and you can see what it is called in English and German. It has every situation. It has the following sections and then subsections under these. Atom, Universe, Earth Man and his Social Environment Nature as Environment, Agriculture, and Forestry Trades, Crafts and Industry and More, More and More. If you need your car fixed in Germany and you have questions on what you call a part you just go to this book and look in the automobile section and you will see very detailed pictures of a car and you find your part, the English word for it and the German word for it. If you are still having troule communicating just show them the picture. This book well deserves six stars

This is the most comprehensive vocabulary book for nouns - even in technical areas - that I have ever encountered. I have not seen another book like it. The bulk of the book is arranged by subject and the back contains all the vocabulary words arranged alphabetically cross-referencing with the subject section. This book is a must-have. It is a reference book. An earlier review mentions it is English not American. In my version (2nd Ed.), the American translations are in parentheses next to the English where there is a difference. There is no problem.

The Duden pictorial dictionary is a phenomenon. Instead of embracing the look-up-a-word style of conventional dictionaries, Duden allows you to browse by subject. If your topic is, say, the mechanical parts of an automobile, you turn to that page and you see an in-depth illustration with numbers, and on the bottom half of the page is a list with the word in German and English for what the number corresponds to. This book is indispensible for learning technical terms not found in most dictionaries, and includes many subjects...sports (even fencing), gambling, automotive, general knowledge, etc...anyone who is going to work for a German firm or wants to increase their vocabulary on an every-day basis should get this book....it is truly exceptional.

Although this stunning work is structured in chapters ranging from canap?s to desserts, to consider it merely a "cookbook" would be to trivialize its content and impact. The French Laundry (in Yountville, CA) is one of the most important restaurants in the United States, and owner Keller is an articulate chef with culinary principles. His philosophy: the palate gets weary, so small and often exotic courses should be designed to maximize the experience of each flavor and texture. He defends tradition, e.g., chickens must be trussed, and yet each recipe is startlingly original. Although this is a complex book for the average busy person--Keller advises: "Take your time. Take a long time"--there are also fairly simple dishes. Epitomizing a love of ingredients (there is a resource guide to esoterica) and an almost magical approach to food, this is required for any real "cookbook" collection.

Excellent cook book, but not for the average home cook

This is an excellent cook book with some delicious recipes, and great insight into the mind of one of the greatest chefs in the world. It talks about all the different aspects of professional cooking, from preparation to taste, to plating and appearance, to portion size and more. Every recipe is directly from Thomas Keller's restaurant The French Laundry (owner of 3 Michelin stars), which the book got it's name from. The book is in the collection of just about every successful chef, and for that it receives 4 stars. However, it is not for the average home cook. This book is aimed directly at professional chefs. It says that all the recipes in it were tested in home kitchens, but I wouldn't recommend this book if you don't have at least a semi-extensive culinary knowledge. A lot of the ingredients aren't just at any grocery store, and some are very expensive. A lot of the procedures require skills that take practice to acquire. If you're not sure about it I suggest going to a book store and checking it out first, or if you're a Kindle member maybe they have a sample.

Pretty. Lovely photography

Pretty. Lovely photography. Good reading, Zen-like. just the thing for a Sunday afternoon browse or to place on a coffee table for guests. *Not* terribly useful. If you want to read the story about how chef Keller got his ideas and motivation for dishes, then by all means buy this book. There are more 'utilitarian' french cookbooks with excellent dishes available, such as Greenspans etc., that oh, for example say, have an index.

Beautiful cookbook

This is a beautiful cookbook. I had the chance to eat at the French Laundry about 10 or 12 years ago and it was a wonderful experience (I don't think I could afford it now, so glad I went when I did). Absolutely delicious and beautiful dishes and so I got this book with a bit of nostalgia. The pictures are lovely and inspirational. I admit that I have not tried any of the recipes, but having looked through them I am not sure I will. The recipes seem overly complicated and many seem incomplete, such as missing steps or lacking detail on how to achieve the desired results. When I have more time, I will try out a recipe or two, but this will not be a "go-to" book for me because of how overly complicated the dishes are and how many key details seem to be lacking.

an interesting artifact

here is a perfect intro to some of the lighter mental aspects of the man known as R. Buckminster Fuller. keep in mind that this book was co-written by Quentin Fiore, so it is not entirely the work of Fuller. I first saw it about 10 years ago and was enamored with it's humor, astuteness, and positive charm. it is very much a period piece, but it is no less interesting now than when it was published. from a design standpoint it is mindblowing...the pages are divided in half longitudinally by two lines of type, one right side up( the top line), and one upside-down. the rest of the upper half of the page is filled with blurbs, clip art and the like. the bottom half is the same, but upside down. the book can be read to the end and flipped, so that the second half that was upside down can be read. also, you can stop at any point and flip the book again and continue. in a way, this book contains the means to keep reading the same book indefinitely, and creates a microcosmic litte universe all it's own. the subject matter is all over the place, but mostly deals with the realities and absurdities of then-modern life. many deep, serious subjects are approached here, as well as banalities of pop culture. it is all done in a way that expresses a raised-eybrow idealisim that is quite magnetizing. I may mention that the artwork/layout is quite good as well, and it's easy to see where other collage artists like Winston Smith got some of their ideas from. to my knowledge this is the only book of it's kind. a good, fun read for someone who wants something a little left field, or someone who wants a non-traditional intro to Mr. Fuller.

There is no such thing as a bad Buckminster Fuller book. It's all in this quote . . . "I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing--a noun . . . I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process--an integral function of the universe.".

I have many Oracle books, but this one is by far my favorite. I recommend the newest version of this book if available, but I have trouble spending that much money on any book. This is my go-to reference for any Oracle or SQL questions. It is very thorough and easy to follow. It is easy to find pretty much anything I'm looking for.

Oracle is very vast but this book has nicely covered all the basic aspects of Oracle that you will need in your day to activity. No doubt that this book will not make you an Oracle Expert but definitely you will learn to move forward. This is the starting point.... This book will make your base for Oracle.

Solid coverage

This is the one I've been waiting for. It's got coverage of the 9i features like external tables and updates the older chapters to include features. I hadn't even heard about multitable inserts before this book. The CD has 9i R2 docs as well as the book scripts. Overall, more in-depth coverage than the 9i New Features book but the new features are more integrated to old text so you may have to read a little more but it's worth it.

The book starts out with an introduction to Windows PowerShell, covering technologies relevant to DSC, such as PowerShell Remoting and CIM.
In the second part the fundamentals is introduced, before advanced DSC concepts and tricks is covered in the last part.

I have worked with DSC and hold presentations on the subjects since DSC was released in PowerShell 4.0, and I have learned a lot I haven`t seen or read about before (even in the product documentation).
For example, the details of how to configure a Web Pull Server was very useful. I`ve used the DSC Resource available in the DSC Resource Kit for configuring a Web Pull Server, and not looked at the details covered in the book.

A lot of other useful information is covered, such as how the DSC download managers uses the Get-DscAction, Get-DscDocument and Get-DscModule cmdlets (nice to know for troubleshooting purposes).

The CIM implementation for DSC is also described in details, for example how to use the available CIM methods to perform actions and apply configurations. This knowledge makes it easier to understand how the technology works under the hood.

The first version of DSC was released in PowerShell (Windows Management Framework) 4.0, and there is also some information about the next version, including bugs which has been fixed.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about PowerShell Desired State Configuration.

Must have book if you want to learn DSC

DSC (Desired State Configuration) introduced in PowerShell version 4.0 was an important milestone in establishing PowerShell as 'the' platform for configuring, managing and automating enterprise data centers. Although, DSC does not provide an end-to-end configuration management tool set, it provides a platform from where you can manage the configuration on your own along with a set of APIs that help you leverage the core functionality with ease.

The problem that DSC faced until now, in my opinion, is that the focus was on getting people to adopt the technology; and there is a void in terms of definitive documentation around how DSC works. There are some very good articles written by some PowerShell gurus (including the author Ravi) which help bridge that gap to a certain extent. Most people starting with DSC do not know where to start, as there are very few good resources which people can reference from. This book bridges the gap, fills in most of the blanks and dispels myths surrounding DSC in a practical manner.

The book is spread across 11 chapters, divided into 3 parts (Introduction to PowerShell, Desired State Configuration and Advanced DSC concepts and Tips). For all readers, even for experienced users, I would recommend thoroughly reading and understanding the following two chapters: Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 as these chapters lay down the foundations for understanding DSC architecture to its fullest.
There are examples spread throughout the book that help you understand the topics, and most of these examples can be used in real-world as well. For example, in chapter 5 while explaining how to use built-in DSC resources we are shown how to write DSC configuration for installing .msi & .exe files using the Package and Process resources respectively.

Overall, this is a great book for:
* Getting you started on DSC, if you are new user.
* Understanding more about DSC architecture if you are IT professional having exposure on infrastructure management in the enterprise.
* Getting started and understanding the implications of rolling your own DSC resources if, you are an IT pro who has already used the built-in resources but understand their limitations.

DSC is one of the hottest topics being spoken about in DevOps. Prior to reading this book I had a limited understanding how DSC actually works. I knew how to author DSC configuration & enact them, but I didn't knew the moving parts or the technology behind it.

This Book starts with a subtle introduction to what PowerShell is and then focuses towards understanding CIM , MOF etc which are the building blocks for DSC.

The book shows what a deep knowledge Ravi Sir has about the topic and his willingness to share it in the most simple and logical way. As the book progress he builds a solid foundation of concepts and explains the whole DSC Architecture in 2 phases:
1. Authoring & Staging
2. Configuration enacting

Starting from Authoring & Staging > Enacting. I have read half of the book so far and it has blown away so many myths I had about DSC :)

Changed: 2 (Wolf's Den)

Declan on yeah. He definitely wanted his mate Rachel but she kept fighting it. Until an attack on her best friend Chloe, with that Rachel had to accept everything. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I love Aline Hunters books, she rocks. She says you can read this book as a stand alone but in my thinking it is so much better to read Marked first and then Changed. That will let you understand everything that is going on.

Sexy Series.

Quick and enjoyable but nothing really happens in this series. If you enjoyed book 1 then you will enjoy book 2. Declan was very patient and sweet with Rachel and as usual the sex was hot. I'm looking forward to Shane's story.

I enjoy a good paranormal and this one didn't disappoint, it has a unique angle on wolves and mating and a mystery to keep you intrigued. I thought the characters were great Declan super sexy and Rachel is perfect for him, Declan is sweet and loving when he's with Rachel which I love. Rachel is my fav though she's tough as nails, no nonsense rough chick who just wants to be loved. I love these two characters together but like anything nothing is easy...Rachel is human and Declan isn't but the unimaginable happens and Rachel is lost in how to deal with her new life. Love the pack members especially Chloe and Jackson. Thought the story was very interesting kept me reading. Would love to read more total cliffhanger but I loved it.. ...4 stars
