Classic Jack Williamson

I'm a big Jack Williamson fan. His stories and novels always seem a bit more polished and thoughtful than what we find in most classic sci-fi. The Green Girl is a pretty wild ride, but it still has that well-written Williamson touch. I have not read The Robot Peril yet, but the premise is almost as "out there" as The Green Girl's. These two novels are well matched in this volume. Very recommended.

beautiful cover, fun books, nice surprise

two fun novels in a nicely produced book. the green girl was a creative crazy trippy fantasy with plenty of science and it moved quite quickly. the cover is absolutely beautiful. i wasn't expecting to enjoy the robot peril but found that i actually liked the writing more. good tension, interesting plot, a nice surprise. fun stuff all around if you're into pulps.

Master of the ironic twist.

A collection of 100 or more short stories by O. Henry? My mouth waters already! It's hard to imagine any literary treat that can be enjoyed in small doses more pleasurable than this. I have spent over a year savouring these stories, reading them one by one, tasting his delightful choice of words, digesting his fascinating story-lines, and the warm satisfying afterglow that comes after a typical twist at the end. O. Henry began writing short stories as a prison inmate, and he quickly fine tuned his skills behind the bars and developed into an excellent storyteller. Born William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), he produced 270 stories under the pseudonym O. Henry. His stories are superbly outstanding in at least four ways, each illustrated with five of my personal favorites.

Firstly, his brilliant use of language. These stories were written in the first half of the twentieth century, and O. Henry's use of language easily surpasses that of most contemporary writers. Not only does he have an extensive vocabulary, but his writing abounds with similes and metaphors that breathe sparkling life and depth into his stories, marred only by the occasional "Lordy". "Ulysses and the Dogman" is a fine example of his skills with a language, metaphorically portraying dog owners as victims of Circe, in a hopeless enchantment to their leashed pets. Also exemplary is "Madame Bo-Peep of the Ranches" where a ranch manager has a heart fenced by barbwire just like the ranch on which he lives, and yet the twist at the ending suggests that perhaps we were completely mistaken. "A Comedy in Rubber" uses wonderfully elevated language to farcically portray a class of people today known as ambulance chasers. And "Sisters of the Golden Circle" revolves around the profound bond that exists between two married women who are strangers but yet sisters "of the plain gold band." "An Unfinished Story" employs profound metaphors of angelic hosts to tell the tragic story of poor Dulcie's struggle for survival.

Secondly, his unique insight into the social conditions of his time. O. Henry has a great understanding of the trials of the lower class, and he frequently pictures the lives of ordinary people of early twentieth century America with warm and sympathetic colours. His characters are frequently the overlooked: the struggling shop girl, the unsuccessful artist, the impoverished. Admittedly, some of his images can be hard to comprehend for modern readers, and the distance that time has placed between us and O. Henry's beloved New York means that some of his verbal pictures will be harder to understand and identify with. But his genuine sympathy for the oppressed cannot be missed. "The Gift of the Magi" is the signature O. Henry story, probably his most famous tale which recounts a poor young couple who both give up a prized possession in order to purchase a gift for one another - but ironically a gift intended to complement the other's prized possession that they have just given up. Another story which display his ability to picture the social conditions of his time - but always with the trademark twist - is "The Pendulum", a wonderful portrait of the daily routines of an poor couple and the bursting anxiety of a married man, until the bubble bursts. "The Cop and the Anthem" was the first O. Henry story I ever read, and humorously recounts the unsuccessful attempts of a man to get into jail for the winter - it remains vivid in my mind as a memorable favorite. "The Furnished Room" is a tragic and shocking story of suicide, depicting the depths of despair and desperation of the impoverished.

Thirdly, his warm humour. O. Henry has an uncanny ability to portray the mundane and the ordinary in the most elevated language. Frequently he pits two characters together in a remarkable way so that one outshines and complements the other. And on other occasions he crafts the most ingenious and humorous schemes for outwitting others. One of his most popular stories is "The Handbook of Hymen", recounting the tale of two men in a winter cabin, one armed with the hilarious Herkimer's handbook of Indispensable Information. And then there is O. Henry's fictional character Jeff Peters, a man who comes with the most ingenious money-making schemes, two shining examples displayed in "Jeff Peters as a Personal Magnet" and "The Exact Science of Matrimony". "Let Me Feel Your Pulse" pokes fun at doctors, while in "Next to Reading Matter" an overly eloquent character wins the heart of a senora with streams of articulate talk about the mundane.

Fourthly, his ironic twist. One of the distinctive characteristics of O. Henry's short stories is the ironic twist at the end, which never fails to surprise and entertain, sometimes reversing the entire story line in a concluding one-liner. O. Henry's suspense and trademark ironic twist ensures that readers who have a good literary taste in short stories will not be disappointed. Like the Jeff Peters stories, "The Love-philtre of Ikey Schoenstein" also feature a brilliant scheme - but a scheme of romance - and the way it backfires is unforgettable. Other delightful examples of ordinary stories with a glorious ironic twist include "Witches' Loaves" and "While the Auto Waits". The twist that comes at the end of "The Hypotheses of Failure" is so perplexing, that you'll have to re-read the entire story after reading the ending - but completely delighted at the way in which O. Henry has misled you. But perhaps one of O. Henry's best uses of the ironic twist comes in "The Last Leaf", a warm and tragic tale describing how a dying artist proves as resilient as the last leaf on the wall outside, and through the self-less sacrifice of another.

The Wordsworth collection is superlative, because it contains more than 700 pages of literary gems. It consists of 100 stories, showcasing a wide range of O. Henry's short-story talents. A few popular favorites are missing, such as "Schools and Schools", "Shearing the Wolf", "The Green Door", and "The Pimienta Pancakes." But the reality is that nearly all O. Henry's stories feature his trademark ironic twist, as they do his warm humour, his unique insight into the social conditions of the time, and his brilliant use of language, and that every story in this collection is a literary delight worthy of inclusion. Ho hum

This book was pretty mindless. The relationship between the H/h was so instantaneous that I felt completely left out of its development. After a couple encounters, both individuals were completely in love with each other. And hey, conversation's not even required! The heroine just read the hero's mind and saw the good things he had done in the past and BOOM, just like that, she loves him and he doesn't have to tell her a thing. It was just so silly. Love at first sight is lovely, but come on... I read your mind and you're awesome so now I love you and you love me too for whatever reason?

Literally, before the book was even half over, the H/h are madly in love and wanting to get married, and I found myself wondering how the book was going to get dragged out in the second half. Troubles ensue, some forced complications get thrown in, will they or won't they have a happy ending, and lo and behold, they do. (Hope that's not actually considered a spoiler :) )

The book was light, mildly funny, and easy to skim. If that's your goal, go for it. For me personally, though, I prefer for even my fluff books to be better than this. This is the second book in a series, so I might have been a little more interested in the recurring characters, but I didn't read the 1st book in the series (and now I don't plan to either).

Enchanting! Captivating! Refreshing and fun to read! 6 stars

My Highland Bride, is a 6 star read! Maeve Greyson, is my favorite author for time travel romance and again, she has caught my heart with the Highland Heart Series. This book has many fantastical aspects to enjoy! This author has done her magic again! She is a very talented writer of paranormal time travel romance and I love everything she writes! I could not put it down, it's fast paced and romantic!

I loved Maeve's first story My Highland Love, which told the story of Gray and Trulie Sinclair, the girl from Kentucky, sent to the past in Scotland. Now, we meet Trulie's sister Kenna. You can imagine my excitement, to meet again, these characters in the amazing journey of Kenna with her sexy highlander Colum. Both Sinclair sisters were born in a long line of women who could time travel, back and fourth in time, and this time, Kenna's journey will unfold! Living in Kentucky with her two younger sisters, her grandmother sends her back in the past to the thirteenth century, to fulfill her destiny. What happens when a bold and stubborn Kentucky young woman stumble in front of a sexy and headstrong highlander with a rich Scottish accent? Well, all hell broke loose! Colum, is a real women charmer and meeting this modern woman from the future will create some hilarious scenes you won't be able to stop giggling! Some phrases are so cute “So, you went along while Granny's idea of hooking me up with a clan gigolo” or “The man's memories were like a streaming Highland porn channel”. Let's say that the Sinclair women, possess some very unique talents, one in particular, that scared men! As soon as they meet, a sensual chemistry will burn and ignite a rich passion, he will become her protector, Colum will definitely be a keeper for Kenna! Once, she has set her mind, she keeps it! Will their love survive and last a lifetime? Enters a mysterious man name Ronan, to add a mystic touch to the intrigue. Her secondary characters were so charming!

This story is filled romance, action, danger and fantastic elements that will surely please all readers. I spent hours of pleasure reading My Highland Bride and for that reason I give it 6 stars. I highly recommend it, specially if you love time travel romance with a dash of fantastic and a Highland touch! If you need to giggle and be intrigued, just sit back, relax and enjoy Kenna and Colum's Scottish journey! I'm very excited to read Ms. Greyson’s next story, My Tempting Highlander. This author is truly a talented writer! She never disappoints me!

Enchantanting, Action-filled Read!

Maeve Greyson has written a wonderful historical time-travel romance that is My Highland Bride. This is about Kenna from the Twenty-first century Kentucky family who has the uncanny ability to read minds, erase memories, and most of all time-travel! Kenna gets a letter from her Granny telling her she must jump to the 13th century where she is and her older sister who is about to give birth. Kenna is quite comfortable in this time and doesn't really want to go where there are no creature comforts like pizza and the internet! But Granny will not be refused. Duty calls! She is also worried about seeing her twin sisters there. Granny has assured her they will be away until it is time from them to jump back to the 13th century and all be together as a family once more. What she doesn't know, is that Granny has found her a mate, and they are waiting for her.

Colum is the hero here-all big, strong, and sexy beast of a man. Once she meets him, she is less than thrilled until she touches him and the electricity zaps up her body! She had the chance to delve into his mind and finds that's he's been with every lass in the clan! She surely doesn't want to end up as another notch on his belt! She feigns disinterest and that rankles Colum. She's the first to make him feel things he's not felt before. Even Kenna feels it.

I really was enchanted with My Highland Bride! It was full of adventure, humor, romance and a whole bunch of everything! The chemistry is hot with these two and it took everything to put it down! There's lots of twists and turns so you will see how hard it was to stop reading! The story is unique with the ability to time-travel back and forth, and when you add in the mind abilities, it's quite a ride! The only thing I would have loved was some more sexy time between these two! Gosh it would have been so spicy! All in all, I highly recommend this as it was fun and chock-full of action read!

This book had everything and I enjoyed every minute of it. The characters were well thought out and the story line was amazing. The surprises were, well, surprises! I will be reading more from this author and hope that all her stories are as well done as this one was.

Its a good book for someone who may have been over weight all their lives. But if you read and try to keep up on current diet and fitness trends this is not the book for you.
