About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

I learned the first time around on this series 20 plus years ago. Since that time I have been in a coma, and have had to relearn a lot of things. I am glad I found this series again. I also require occupational therapy with my left hand, and playing piano is doing wonders for Lefty.

An exellent book...

I've got this book as a reference for the course I'm taking in school of public health. I got it and I finished it in 3-4 days. An excellent book, very easy to read and follow. Excellent surveys and very usefull points. I highly recommend this book for whoever that thinks (s)he want to become a teacher, a trainer and above all trains the trainer.
As a medical resident, I used lessons I've learned from this book and the result was excellent. I'm looking for other books written by the author.

Karen's Excellent Work!

Training and facilitation are two different skill sets. Karen's work will help fill critical skill gaps for new trainers/facilitators lacking formalized training experience/skill. This book will provide solid foundational learning development skills every well-rounded trainer must know for effectiveness in a field learning organization where we do it all (learning assessment to evaluation). Finally, Karen's work draws an important distinction between facilitating and training. Karen's work provides excellent examples of solid facilitation performance, where facilitators leverage the room's knowledge heavily in the learning process without being a subject matter expert. This comes in handy when you are facilitating learning for a topic that you have little experience or context for training as a subject matter expert-trainer. Or, when you have topic expertise and must strategically leverage it in such a way that it does not prevent learner's from confidently sharing their experiences. As facilitators, we are "Guides on the side, Not the Sage on the Stage". Get this book!

As a working software engineer with many years of programming experience, I am quite familiar with embedded and system software architecture. I have a bachelors degree in Computer Engineering Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology. I have worked on locomotive brake systems, networking equipment, slot machines, and most recently Bluetooth testing devices. My experience covers low level assembly for the Z80 processor to C++/C# programming of Windows Server applications and multi-platform systems. I am an avid photographer specializing in landscape photography. I enjoy writing software and writing books and really enjoy when I can bring all of my interests together into a project.

√ Lots of Excellent Information

I was surprised by the contents of this book. By the title, you would think that ARDUINO FOR KIDS is a really simple, very superficial intro, with just sketch details. Not so! This book has TONS of technical information on setup, circuitry and programming of the Arduino. Of course, remember that the subtitle is, FOR KIDS YOUNG AND OLD. That's the trick--it's not really for little kids--it's for big kids--the kinds that drive cars and have ski boats and motorcycles in their garage. Here are some highlights:

♦ Lots of screen captures showing you what to do.
♦ It looks to me like the author really knows what he is talking about. Each section has an extensive explanation of what the circuit does, or how to program it.
♦ Tons of examples of code.
♦ Lots of "lessons learned" on how the author implemented a certain feature--such as programming inputs or outputs.

A few formatting suggestions:
♦ I'm not sure including the code in the text was helpful. I thought it made it more difficult to read. I would have preferred the code excerpts in an appendix. Other readers might like it the way it is.
♦ Sometimes the descriptions went on for a long time in one huge paragraph. Made it tougher for me to follow. For example, the "Digital Input" section is very long. Same comment for the "Outputs" section.
♦ On my Kindle, some of the code sections are automatically grayed-out. Not sure why the formatting goes to that.

√ All in all, a great resource, with lots of excellent advice! Content is great. My main gripe is with the formatting and style of presentation.

Simply one of the best Arduino books for young and old - just as the title says. Daniel Milligan has that rare ability to address both beginners and advanced at the same time. My nephew is almost through the book and has already coded a couple of original projects inspired by Mr. Milligan.
