Not the greatest.

I don't like the way the book is set up, and the paper quality is not very good. It feels like it was cheaply made. The book also is not organized well, you wouldn't expect to find some topics where they are.

Art Matters: Strategies Ideas and Activities to strengthen learning across the Curriculum
By K. Branson
Art Matters provides an excellent basis for integrated learning in education. Through each stage, it provides clear and constructive methods of linking Art content with other subjects in the school curriculum. Often Art teachers do not have time to work with teachers of other subjects in building units of work where subjects are well planned and thoughtfully connected - and this book does this so well.

Helpful book for teachers
By S. Roberts
I bought this book to help me prepare for my National Board Assessment Center exercise in Art. It was very helpful to me as I am in a school district that places NO emphasis on art and it had been years since I really thought about how to use art in the classroom. Not only did the book help me in my test preparation, it also made me think about how I can use art in my classroom to enhance learning.

Lesenswert, Interessant, unterhaltsam.
By Thedi
Gut geschrieben, angenehm zu lesen. Dafr 5 Sterne.

The Inheritance of Loss, by Kiran Desai

Published to extraordinary acclaim, The Inheritance of Loss heralds Kiran Desai as one of our most insightful novelists. She illuminates the pain of exile and the ambiguities of postcolonialism with a tapestry of colorful characters: an embittered old judge; Sai, his sixteen-year-old orphaned granddaughter; a chatty cook; and the cook’s son, Biju, who is hopscotching from one miserable New York restaurant to another, trying to stay a step ahead of the INS. When a Nepalese insurgency in the mountains threatens Sai’s new-sprung romance with her handsome tutor, their lives descend into chaos. The cook witnesses India’s hierarchy being overturned and discarded. The judge revisits his past and his role in Sai and Biju’s intertwining lives. A story of depth and emotion, hilarity and imagination, The Inheritance of Loss tells a story of love, family, and loss.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This stunning second novel from Desai (Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard) is set in mid-1980s India, on the cusp of the Nepalese movement for an independent state. Jemubhai Popatlal, a retired Cambridge-educated judge, lives in Kalimpong, at the foot of the Himalayas, with his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, and his cook. The makeshift family's neighbors include a coterie of Anglophiles who might be savvy readers of V.S. Naipaul but who are, perhaps, less aware of how fragile their own social standing is—at least until a surge of unrest disturbs the region. Jemubhai, with his hunting rifles and English biscuits, becomes an obvious target. Besides threatening their very lives, the revolution also stymies the fledgling romance between 16-year-old Sai and her Nepalese tutor, Gyan. The cook's son, Biju, meanwhile, lives miserably as an illegal alien in New York. All of these characters struggle with their cultural identity and the forces of modernization while trying to maintain their emotional connection to one another. In this alternately comical and contemplative novel, Desai deftly shuttles between first and third worlds, illuminating the pain of exile, the ambiguities of post-colonialism and the blinding desire for a "better life," when one person's wealth means another's poverty.

From The New Yorker
Desai's second novel is set in the nineteen-eighties in the northeast corner of India, where the borders of several Himalayan states—Bhutan and Sikkim, Nepal and Tibet—meet. At the head of the novel's teeming cast is Jemubhai Patel, a Cambridge-educated judge who has retired from serving a country he finds "too messy for justice." He lives in an isolated house with his cook, his orphaned seventeen-year-old granddaughter, and a red setter, whose company Jemubhai prefers to that of human beings. The tranquillity of his existence is contrasted with the life of the cook's son, working in grimy Manhattan restaurants, and with his granddaughter's affair with a Nepali tutor involved in an insurgency that irrevocably alters Jemubhai's life. Briskly paced and sumptuously written, the novel ponders questions of nationhood, modernity, and class, in ways both moving and revelatory.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Maybe it’s in her genes: the daughter of Indian novelist Anita Desai, Kiran Desai skips past the sophomore doldrums with this assured second novel. The same characteristics that made her first book, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard, notable are here in spades: an "utterly fresh" (Boston Globe) narrative voice, jaw-dropping descriptive passages, and a mlange of vibrant, sympathetic characters. But critics praise her graduation to a wider field of inquiry. She’s forgiven the occasional lapse into didactics, especially concerning the Nepalese revolt. Reviewers concur with the Los Angeles Times that The Inheritance of Loss "amplifies a developing and formidable voice."

UN Women Book Club Gulf Coast reads Kiran Desai
By Leita Kaldi Davis
The UN Women/USNC Gulf Coast Book Club met on Monday, June 13,2016 to discuss The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. Desai won the Man Booker Prize in 2006, among many other awards. Her mother is Anita Desai, also an award-winning writer, who we read last year with great interest and pleasure. Kiran writes in an exquisite style laced with poetic metaphors, fraught with tensions among a kalediscope of characters who live near the Darjeeling Hills of northern India during the 1980s when a revolution exploded for the independence of Ghorkhaland for Nepalis in India. Far-reaching effects of colonialism mark the isolated grandfather judge, who learned self-loathing under the Raj, along with aunties of a certain age. The judge's grand-daughter, Sai, loses both scientist parents in Russia to a car accident, and finds a lonely refuge in his sprawling, decrepit home. The cook's son, Biju, finds only suffering in the dungeons of undocumented immigrants in America's cities, until he desperately returns to his father, losing everything along the way. Desai describes the myriad characters' lives as rather idyllic until history catches up with them and everyone feels the inheritance of their losses. In Desai's words:
This was how history moved, the slow build, the quick burn, and in an incoherence, the leaping both backward and forward, swallowing the young into old hate. The space between life and death, in the end, too small to measure.

A wonderful novel!
By an interested reader
I listened to the book, did not read it. The reader was just right. I listened to each CD a few times to get the full flavor of it, and because there’s a lot going on. Beautifully written, well deserved the Booker prize. It did what novels I really admire do, showed characters bent by the worlds they inhabit, showed a sweep of history, a large social landscape. It’s grim, and frightening, but the grimness is alleviated by the warmth, wit, humor, geniality. The book begs for a sequel—I’m totally committed to these characters. Author, author: sequel, please!

I don't get why the ranking isn't a lot higher than it is.

Exquisite!
By Mrs. Kandy N. Smith
A book written with such insight and understanding of the Indian Psyche. A journey of hope, disappointment and joy with humour and aching descriptions of Indians abroad. I loved every single page. I had to sit and read it to my mother who lived in Darjeeling because she kept putting it off and I wanted to share the poignant moments with her. one word..... "Exqusitie"! Makes me a humble author almost despair that I could never measure up to this.......!

Survival of the Nicest: How Altruism Made Us Human and Why It Pays to Get Along, by Stefan Klein

A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2014

This revelatory tour de force by an acclaimed and internationally bestselling science writer upends our understanding of “survival of the fittest”—and invites us all to think and act more altruistically

The phrase “survival of the fittest” conjures an image of the most cutthroat individuals rising to the top. But Stefan Klein, author of the #1 international bestseller The Science of Happiness, makes the startling assertion that altruism is the key to lasting personal and societal success. In fact, altruism defines us: Natural selection favored those early humans who cooperated in groups, and with survival more assured, our altruistic ancestors were free to devote brainpower to developing intelligence, language, and culture—our very humanity.

Klein’s groundbreaking findings lead him to a vexing question: If we’re really hard-wired to act for one another’s benefit, why aren’t we all getting along? He believes we’ve learned to mistrust our instincts because success is so often attributed to selfish ambition, and with an extraordinary array of material—current research on genetics and the brain, economics, social psychology, behavioral and anthropological experiments, history, and modern culture—he makes the case that generosity for its own sake remains the best way to thrive.

Review
A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2014

“[A] mind-bending book . . . if there is a science to winning over readers, Klein has surely mastered it. . . . The wealth of knowledge here is astounding.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Klein offers a slew of evidence. . . [and] documents his claims thoroughly.”—Science News

“[O]ne of the book’s key strengths [is] its breadth. From psychological experiments to anthropological studies and historical events like the Holocaust or 9/11, Klein seamlessly weaves his way through all to present compelling evidence for why humans have evolved to be selfless. Survival of the Nicest entertainingly informs its readers of how they are born to be altruistic . . .”
—UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center

“This wonderful book could be read as a scientific explanation for a moral imperative to be kind to others. But it is so much more! Stefan Klein, an enticing storyteller, marshals the evidence for the value of altruism—not only to one’s family but, much more interestingly, to one’s self and one’s tribe. Altruism is truly contagious!”
—Roald Hoffman, Nobel Laureate, poet, and Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters Emeritus, Cornell University

“A scholarly tour de force about why generosity makes good sense, Survival of the Nicest is also compulsively readable. Klein argues convincingly that helping others is one of the best things we can do for ourselves.”
—Elizabeth Svoboda, author of What Makes a Hero?: The Surprising Science of Selflessness

“A thought-provoking and comprehensive review of the research on altruism, Survival of the Nicest validates humanistic principles and has far-reaching implications for today’s world—especially for US politics and culture. An inspiration!”
—Rebecca Hale, president, American Humanist Association, and co-owner of EvolveFISH.com

“An important contribution to the field of altruism and altruistic behavior and to a better and nicer world. I highly recommend this book.”
—Samuel P. Oliner, PhD, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, Humboldt State University, and founder and director, The Altruistic Personality and Prosocial Behavior Institute

“In Survival of the Nicest, Stefan Klein poses three questions central to social science and ethics: (1) How is unselfishness possible? (2) What moves us to help others? And (3) why are some people more helpful than others? His wide-ranging answers to these questions suggest that altruism is born into us and that selflessness actually both makes us happy and will transform the world.”
—Kristen Renwick Monroe, Chancellor’s Professor, University of California, Irvine, and author of The Heart of Altruism

“This eloquent and persuasive book shows why in life, like in the movies, the nice guy always wins.”
—Stephen Cave, author of Immortality

“Thoroughly readable...fabulously informative...Survival of the Nicest makes you want to be good and to feel good about it.”—Sunday Times

“A glowing argument for post-Darwinian co-operation.”—Evening Standard

“Well written”—Independent

Hope for the human race
By Kristin J. Johnson
I have only one minor quibble with this book. The slightly troubling passage emerges on page 207, buried in the end of the book, as perhaps an answer to Ayn Rand:

"[T]he dream of the autonomous individual--the widespread belief that everyone holds their own destiny in their hands--seems dubious. The idea of liberal democracy, to give the individual the greatest possible freedom, is in urgent need of revision."

It is this kind of thinking that collectivists and despots have used for centuries to promote oppressive regimes, and I am frankly shocked that a thinker of Stefan Klein's caliber would resort to such a shoddy and even dangerous argument, which undermines the last 209 pages of argument. This book makes such a beautiful case for altruism and interdependence that it is a shame Klein goes from "Competition Engenders Altruism" (p. 138) to "The time of the lone cowboy is over." Granted, even in the passage on page 138-139, Klein discusses competition in terms of a basketball team. However, elsewhere in the book he admits altruists can go overboard on being selfless.

This self-contradiction aside, this readable book elegantly synthesizes Daniel Goleman, V.S. Ramachandran, and TED Talks to successfully make its case that we are not only born altruists, except for a few freeloaders in the Free Rider experiment (pages 125-126), we develop this skill, even as two-year-olds, in order to survive and later because we like being social and giving. Nice Homo Sapiens DON'T finish last and neither do vampire bats (!)

In eleven chapters plus the questionable epilogue, Klein builds a systematic, witty case.

Chapter 1: Darwin was an extremely sympathetic person, exemplifying the revelation that we all can be altruists.

Chapter 2: Adam and Eve would have learned to cooperate had there been a refrigerator in the Garden of Eden and would have had an antennae for the Serpent cheating them out of eternal life.

Chapter 3: If you get ripped off by the neighbor you're helping and you still volunteer to visit his brother in prison, you are less of a schmuck than he is because he trusts no one.

Chapter 4: For mental power, the empathetic brain beats Frank Underwood's any day.

Chapter 5: Oxytocin and Vasopressin show "What's love got to do with it."

Chapter 6: Vampires are altruists and small children know that they've got to be adorable to thrive.

Chapter 7: Now that we are in love and sharing and empathetic, we're also upset over injustice and willing toe right it no matter the cost.

Chapter 8: Everything in moderation, or it can't take a village to raise a child if that village is wiped out trying to right a wrong.

Chapter 9: The dark sisters of selflessness can get radicalized in not just a village but a nation, defeating altruism.

Chapter 10: Confucius say love thy neighbor no matter what nation he lives in.

Chapter 11: Confucius say the exchange of information is great and people should share all over the World Wide Web.

Apologies for the tongue in cheek summaries as I altruistically share this information with you, and forgive Kleon for a minor flaw.

The New Human Nature
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
Conventional economics and biology sneer at generosity. People who give of themselves get fleeced regularly, and diminish their chances to survive and reproduce. Yet the world ordinary people occupy practically shimmers with mundane kindness; without it, we couldn't conduct urban economies or do industrial jobs. But what is altruism, really? How did it originate, and what encourages it to flourish? After centuries of debate, science may have some answers.

Though trained as a physicist, German author Stefan Klein has made a career writing about the points where science impacts general society--a Teutonic Carl Sagan, perhaps. In this case, his interests throw sharp light on neuroscience and psychology, though his investigations overlap with the growing domain of behavioral economics. And he draws a surprising conclusion: more than language or technology, generosity and altruism make us genuinely human.

Because humans cannot survive individually, much less thrive, evolution rewarded primordial humans who engaged in quid pro quo generosity. This persists today in acts of trust, kindness, and public ethics that make modern society possible. Yet the very conditions altruism fosters discourage people from behaving generously. Neuroscience tells us that human society may soon shift, requiring altruism to ensure continued human survival.

Science and natural philosophy have long speculated on the motivations behind altruism, speculations Klein partly recapitulates here. From Aristotelian ethics to Richard Dawkins' "Selfish Gene" theory, speculations have drawn on complex mixes of influences. But only recently has science reached the point where we can objectively analyze not only what people really do, but what mental and biological processes fuel these actions. Though highly complex, Klein explains the science eloquently.

Experimental techniques with Clint Eastwood titles, like The Prisoner's Dilemma, The Free Rider Game, and Ultimatum, allow researchers to observe human generosity (and stinginess) in action. Though many of these games have existed for decades, new neuroimaging technologies permit glimpses inside human brains, in real time, as people make key decisions and formulate ethical precepts. The results, as Klein describes them, are anything but obvious.

During such interactions, it turns out, we have opportunities to establish norms that make future dealings possible. The way we play the Free Rider Game, for instance, allows groups to agree on ethics, not just of generosity, but of how to penalize goldbrickers. This holds true across not only groups as small as two or three, but across entire societies. Democracy and capitalism absolutely rely upon neurological habits we acquire during such simple trust exercises.

Strangely, the approaches groups traditionally use to encourage altruism and punish greed don't really work. Klein shows how verbal praise and public recognition make much better motivators for good behavior than money or possessions. Paying people to do right actually counteracts meaningful gains. And punishments that originate "on high" have far less impact on bad behavior than mass peer pressure or censure from one's equals. Praise and scolding: who knew?

Klein's model refutes both common liberal and conservative lines about social organization. Top-down authoritarian government produces not honesty, but resistance, while libertarian ideals encourage mass defection from the social order. Effective codes of honesty instead percolate upward from the masses, and the people do a much better job punishing infringements than either the state or the private sector. Serious readings of Klein's conclusions will force sweeping reconsiderations of contemporary authority.

Stefan Klein's book runs short, but is packed with the kind of dense, surprising information we expect from Malcolm Gladwell or Charles Duhigg. He's informative, helpful, lucid, and frequently funny. I defy any reader, regardless of preformed positions on human nature, to read this book without having to reconsider what you think you think. Because if Klein's sources are right, human nature will soon have a new model.

This is a good introduction to the debate
By Save the Elephants
This is a good introduction to the debate, and the anecdotal evidence for selfless, sacrificial acts is compelling. However, I wish that Klein had made a more convincing explanation for acts of wanton cruelty. In-group loyalty versus between-group hostility starts to explain them, but people sometimes seem as capable of spontaneous acts of hatred as they do spontaneous acts of benevolence, without a group to identify with or defend.

Debugging by Thinking: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach is the first book to apply the wisdom of six disciplines―logic, mathematics, psychology, safety analysis, computer science, and engineering―to the problem of debugging. It uses the methods of literary detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, the techniques of mathematical problem solving, the results of research into the cognitive psychology of human error, the root cause analyses of safety experts, the compiler analyses of computer science, and the processes of modern engineering to define a systematic approach to identifying and correcting software errors.

Excellent review of debugging techniques

Thanks for pointing out the sample chapter. I bought this book and found it very interesting. I was particularly impressed by Appendix B - Books about debugging. Also I have to add that one of the popular static analysis tools for C/C++/Java in EMEA is PRQA C/C++/J (Programming Research Ltd.)

By Dmitry Vostokov
I've been debugging for more that 15 years. Most of the books about debugging approaches are too elementary for me. The title of this book and short table of contents sound interesting (I gave 5 stars for that :-) but I don't want to order this book and then find that it's too simple or only for beginners. May be it's philosophical and doesn't have enough technical content. I don't know. If anyone has read it please post the review. Also it would be nice to have "search inside" feature for this book. HP website has neither good table of contents nor a sample chapter.

The Billionaire Meets his Match What a wonderful read...
By April R Symes
***A gifted copy was provided by the author for my honest review****

This is the sixth book in the Billionaire Boys Club. This is Cade Archer's story AND he does not end up with Daphne . His leading lady for this story is Kylie Daniels-she is a makeup artist who is working for Daphne on her tour. Kylie is the total opposite of Daphne in every way; she is mistreated by Daphne but she needs this job to care for her sick grandmother so she takes the abuse .

The night Cade and Kylie meet there is insane attraction, instant chemistry BUT Daphne is in the way. Kylie and Cade end up having this wild night of passion which turns into something more engaging. There are such conflicting feelings between them- passion, budding love, guilt over Daphne even though Cade hasn’t dated her in a while. Cade is actually happy that he has Kylie in his life and is willing to do what he has to keep her in his life because she brings light back into his life. Kylie is willing to hide their relationship from Daphne because Cade brings her happiness and he seems to accept her for who she is and her size( she is a BBW) and doesn’t look down on her.

Kylie has never really known love in her life. Her grandmother was abusive to her before her illness. She works now to keep her grandmother in a care facility. Before this job, she was months behind on payments to that care facility with no money to her name and crashing on her friend's couch. Kylie was so desperate and was willing to take this job and sign the no disclosure clause. Kylie just barely survived her previously relationship and she knows this relationship with Cade will be the end of her because not only will this damage her career and her self, but Cade will leave her too.
I was mad that Daphne was brought into this story but when I think about it, I understand why and I am so glad that Jessica Claire did so. It explained Cade and Daphne’s backstory and rounded out how they end and gives them closure in order for Cade to move on. Cade was dealing with so much pain from the past, from the wreckage of what had occurred with Daphne. Now that he has Kylie in his life, he is fighting so hard to keep what is good in his life. He is still just as sinfully good like in the previous books and I love that he is finally getting the HEA because he deserves it.

Kylie and Cade had some intense, passionate scenes in this book. There times together were romantic, sweet, steamy, and times sentimental and wistful. They had to keep their sexy times a secret from Daphne so they were “doin’ it and doin’ it well “ in secret and it made the sex so explosively hot and heavy and oh so good that I had to turn the fans on, that it was so good. Things were going so good until …until Daphne found out and all heck broke loose and the billionaire and makeup artist had to decide was their good thing worth fighting for. Cade and Kylie is such a wonderful couple and I loved them. I felt for Kylie because I could put myself in her shoes. She is a regular gal, dealing with body issues and wondering could she be loved for herself. Cade, even though very very rich, wants to be loved for who HE is, not for his money. Two great people wanting the one thing- to be loved for themselves. Will they reach for that or will they squander what they have and let it go?

I think what didn’t work for me was Daphne’s management company having to be the evil in the story and then also making Daphne the evil as well. I felt like it made things a bit scattered for me. I liked to focus and make one the really big evil. But overall, this was a fantastic story and I loved all the goings on with this story.

Do Kylie and Cade get the HEA? Does Daphne ever get her act together? You will have to read to find out.

My rating: 4.8 stars *****

Cinderella fairy tale
By Sandy S.
ONE NIGHT WITH A BILLIONAIRE is the sixth installment in Jessica Clare’s adult, contemporary Billionaire Boys Club romance series focusing on a group of self made billionaires (and friends). This is billionaire investor Cade Archer, and make up artist Kylie Daniels. ONE NIGHT WITH A BILLIONAIRE can be read as a stand alone. Any important information from previous storylines is imparted where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives ONE NIGHT WITH A BILLIONAIRE follows the building relationship between Kylie and Cade, and Cade’s crumbling ‘friendship’ with the infamous singer Daphne Petty. The reader was first introduced to Daphne and her struggling relationship with Cade in book three-THE WRONG BILLIONAIRE’S BED. Cade Archer has been in love with Daphne since they were children but Daphne’s drug addiction and questionable lifestyle have forced Cade to get Daphne help on too many occasions. Enter curvaceous and plump Kylie Daniels-Daphne’s new make up artist-and the woman who would capture Cade’s heart. After a drunken one-night stand with Kylie, Cade wakes up alone with little memory about what had happened-the only thing he knows-he wants more from Kylie Daniels.

The relationship is one of mutual attraction although Kylie’s self esteem has been shattered by a past rife with condescending insults and the loss of her parents. Kylie does not understand Cade’s attraction to her, and in this, she believes Cade is only filling an empty hole left behind from his attraction and love for Daphne Petty. The $ex scenes are provocative and steamy. Cade is a man who has fallen in love with Kylie who believes she is not worthy of a man like Cade. Afraid of losing her job if Daphne discovers her relationship with Cade, Kylie is not willing to place herself in any further compromising positions. Kylie has kept secret her family history- a history that now costs every penny Kylie makes.

Our first introduction to Cade (in book three) found a man whose dependency upon his friendship with Daphne left little to be desired. Here was a man who had fallen in love with his best friend-a friend whose lifestyle focused on her next drug fix leaving Cade to willingly pick up the pieces when her own family had written off the addicted star. Sometimes it is better to walk away then to be an enabler; their co-dependent relationship left a bad taste in this reader’s mouth. But Cade is a changed man. He recognizes that Daphne will never be the young woman with whom he had previously fallen in love, and in this, Cade is willing to take the next step and look towards the future with someone else-if only Daphne had gotten the memo.

The secondary and supporting characters include many of Daphne’s assistants, dancers and tour regulars whose own lives have been less than happy while bending to the whims and wishes of a drug addicted star. Cade’s billionaire friends make a small appearance at the end of the story, but Cade will reach out to Reese (The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed #3) when Kylie continues to push Cade away. Although Daphne has yet to get her happily ever after, perhaps we will see something in Jessica Clare’s spin off series-Billionaires and Bridesmaid.

ONE NIGHT WITH A BILLIONAIRE is a sexy and wonderful read with texting, panty negotiations, and supply closet $ex. There are moments of tears and romance; betrayal and pain; falling in love and letting go. Jessica Clare pulls the reader into a storyline where the heroine is not perfect; she is not a size two but a woman whose curves call to the man of her heart. The characters are colorful, engaging and charismatic; the premise a Cinderella fairy tale; the happily ever after a storybook promise.

Loved It! Well written, great characters and smoking HAWT sex!!
By Lorraine Joy
(This is a book 6 but it's a standalone, you can start the series right here, I did)

I have to just begin by saying that I'm surprised by my own self. I didn't think I would be giving this book a 5 star rating when I started it. In fact, right after I figured out that this book had a bbw romance, I put it down and didn't return to it for months. I'm going to be honest (because why not?), I don't read bbw romance. I'm here for the fantasy aspect of it all. I don't like to think about my own rolls and fat so I damn sure don't want to read about a heroine's. That's just not my fantasy. Or at least it wasn't. I liked Jessica Clare's depiction of the relationship between Kylie and Cade so much that I just got over my bias and enjoyed the book.

All bias and personal neurosis aside, this book had everything that I really love. Kylie is a makeup artist for a pop star, Daphne. Daphne is the drugged out but long coveted love interest of Cade. When Cade is finally tired of the strung out antics of the pop princess, he walks away and into (literally) Kylie. Of course Kylie is employed by Daphne and like every good heroine in desperate need of cash so she can't just quit. Although Daphne never wanted Cade before, we all know there is nothing like new relationship cologne to attract a woman to a man. So as soon as Kylie and Cade get involved, Daphne decides that he is in fact her boo. Shenanigans ensues.

I liked the characterization of Kylie by the author. She really was a fun and caring heroine with a great sense of humor. You can't help but to root for her to get her HEA. I love the note she left Cade after their first night together. I also liked that even though Daphne was like a really bad bunion, Kylie still had compassion for her and her situation.

There were two things about Kylie that did eventually annoy me. First is super petty, I just didn't like Kylie's physical description....and I'm not talking about weight. I just wasn't in to the retro hair with the red ends or the drawn on eyebrows, like all of it was giving me a bad visual trip. I told you it was petty but hey, now you know how I roll. The other more significant thing I didn't like was Kylie's obsession with being a burden. I totally get how it was an issue for her but it just went on for too long and became repetitive. There are several pages where I felt like the exact same internal monologue is repeated: 'I don't want to be a burden, I can never be a burden, I will never be a burden again, repeat.' I know authors have to build some angst into the plot line but there was a point when it crossed the "eye roll" line because it was like oh c'mon, you're going to let all this happen because of this crazy hang up?

I loved Cade. He is my perfect alpha, possessive, bossy, buy the world and give it to you on a platinum platter Hero. Interestingly, even Cade's love for Daphne (that was strictly on a friendship level throughout the book, no cheating here for those of you who don't read cheating books) endeared him to me. I loved Cade's pursuit of Kylie and despite my bbw bias, I really ended up with good feelings about a man who is independent enough to decide what he wants in a woman and damn the torpedoes.

The relationship between Kylie and Cade is sweet and developed through heart felt communication about the things that are important to them. In other words, you don't walk away from this book asking what was between the main characters beyond sex. And speaking of SEX, holy smoking panties!!!! I needed a ciggie several times after reading a few of the scenes in this book. This is some knock your knickers off type ish and you know i loved every minute of it. There is a scene in a janitors closet and ladies and gentlemen just hmmmmm! Very good stuff! 6 stars for the sex.

There isn't a lot of information about supporting characters besides Daphne but I liked the text message interactions with Reese (apparently he was the star of a previous book in the series). Daphne's roommate Star was also appropriately quirky and fun.

To sum up this book I would say- well written, great characters, smoking hawt sex and fast moving plot. Even if you are bbw bias like me, I still recommend this book. Indeed, I am eager to fill my Kindle up with other books by this author. Probably the other ones from this series since this was my first.

Thinking About Architecture: An Introduction to Architectural Theory, by Colin Davies

In order to understand architecture in all its cultural complexity it is necessary to grasp certain basic concepts such as representation, form, and space. The aim of this book is to provide designers, teachers, students, and interested laypersons with a set of ideas that will enrich their conversation, their writing, and above all their thinking about architecture. Written in a conversational style, it introduces difficult concepts gradually, step by step. Architectural theorists and philosophers are mentioned in passing and their works are listed in the bibliography, but they are not the subject of the book. Architecture, rather than philosophy, is at the centre of the picture. The aim is to enable the reader to understand architecture in all its aspects, rather than to learn the names of particular theorists. The book is divided into eight chapters, each covering a particular aspect of architecture. Thinking about Architecture will be an invaluable standard introduction to architectural theory for architecture students, practising architects and interested general readers.

An elegant presentation of usually obscure and hard-to-digest ideas. If not for the insight that it offers or the way in which it weaves together history, theory, practicality, read Davies' book for a master's lesson in how to be a servant teacher. It is a feat of clear communication.

Could've been 5 stars if the card stock was thicker
By Robin M
I'm giving this deck four stars instead of five solely because of the card stock. As other reviewers have said, these cards are ***flimsy***. And they're slick. Not only are they difficult to shuffle, they will also slide around even on a flat tabletop. Aside from that, I really like this set! The book is well written and fascinating; the case that the book and cards come in is reasonably sturdy and cleverly designed; and the artwork on the cards is charming. I'm also pleased with how easy and fun it is to do a reading with them - and wow, are they accurate! With one reading, I thought the information had to be a mistake, until the event happened out of the blue a few days later; fortunately, I wasn't caught off-guard, thanks to that reading. Even if you don't have much faith in oracles, the images are great for sparking topics for conversations. If you are willing to handle the cards carefully, then I recommend this set. :)

Fun, Accurate & Insightful Tool
By Laura De Giorgio
I use a lot of different tools for divination and each has its own strengths and angles in terms of what kind of insights it offers, but I have found these cards to be very easy to use, fun, accurate and insightful.
While I love I Ching and Tarot - and have been using them for years, together with prophetic dreaming, shamanic journeying and lot of other methods for accessing one's inner wisdom - these cards can be effectively used even by people who have never used any divination tools before.
Those who have extensive background with other tools may find these cards to add a variety and a new slant - with a touch of Eastern European wisdom and a few humorous metaphors / proverbs as in "love is not a potato, you can't just throw it out the window!".
