Easy Artists' Tricks

If you love art, but feel intimidated to even try to paint, this book may turn you into an artist. Have you ever looked at a picture and wondered how the use of light and shadow, colors layered upon layers created a stunning picture? Rosalind Cuthbert makes it so easy. When I bought this book I simply wanted to learn how the artists bring life to their paintings. Now that I've delved into it a bit, I'm considering taking up drawing and painting myself.

One would expect a book about painting to have splendid photos and this book does not disappoint us. More than that, the author discusses the painting equipment needed, and breaks down the lessons into six chapters. They are: Basic Techniques, Understanding and Mixing Color, Composing and Painting Still Life, Developing Landscapes and Townscapes, Depicting Water, and Painting figures.

There is no substitute for a live art teacher, but Cuthbert's book is the next best thing.

I bought this book because my Neo Impressionistic teacher recommended it. I saw her copy and decided it would be a good addition to my library. It has lots of example photographs and clear dialog. A good reference book for your library.

Full of Wisdom

This is an interesting book with interesting principles. There's actually a lot of practical wisdom in this book. I was first introduced to the author while flipping channels; he's dynamic and wise. However, in his book he comes off as arrogant and closed-minded. There are many biblical references, which may or may not work for some. I would classify the author as a fundamental Christian.

About the Author
The Editor: Knut Lundby is Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo, Norway. He holds a Dr.philos. in sociology from the University of Oslo. He is the director of the Mediatized Stories project which this book draws upon.

Best Scholarly Book on Digital Storytelling to Date

If you are an educator or multimedia developer with an interest in digital storytelling, this may not be the book for you. It won't give you much guidance on how to lead others in telling personal stories through screen media. If, however, you are a scholar interested in theory and research on the reciprocal relationship between communications media and the authoring and interpretation of narratives, or the function of digital storytelling for the storytellers, this is the best book available on the topic.

The book is an edited anthology of 16 chapters held together fairly well by a focus on digital storytelling and "mediatization", theorizing the relationship between media and social practice. The authors begin with Digital Storytelling as developed by Lambert and the Center for Digital Storytelling at Berkeley, but expanded to include large-scale undertakings like the BBC's Telling Lives and Capture Wales projects, and Australia's efforts to bring digital storytelling into schools. Attention is also paid to the general and unorganized distribution of narratives through Web 2.0. There are some familiar US contributors (Glynda Hull, James Wertsch), but most of the authors are from Scandinavia, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and they bring perspectives of media theorists together with cultural psychologists. Together, they invigorate thinking about the implications of digital narratives by ordinary people.

Superbly readable eye-wintess Account

In this superb memoir, William L. Shirer describes life inside Nazi Germany from his six-year perch (1934-1940) as a foreign correspondent for newspapers and CBS radio. Readers get a feel for everyday life in Nazi Germany as Hitler consolidated his power, crushed (or killed) his opponents, and put the jobless to work building a war machine for future conquest.

Shirer begins by describing his days in Vienna, Afghanistan, Spain, and France, but the book's heart comes with his posting to Berlin in 1934. Readers learn about Gestapo terror, prewar rearmament, increasing anti-Semitism, and the devotion of many (but not all) Germans to their violent Fuehrer. Shirer also examines the inexplicable appeasement policies of France and Britain - policies that leave one as baffled today as in the 1930's. The author recounts joining Ed Murrow at CBS Radio in 1938 and then broadcasting events such as the Anchluss (takeover) of Austria, the betrayal at Munich, and the German invasion of Poland. Shirer also recounts traveling with the German army as it tore through Belgium in 1940, seeing Paris under Nazi rule, and broadcasting the French surrender. The book's nicely readable prose vividly recreates the stifling atmosphere and the unfolding, utterly preventable tragedy.

Journalist-author William L. Shirer (1904-93) wrote superbly readable eye-witness accounts of 20th Century history. This 1984 memoir was his final bestseller on Nazi Germany, and every bit as readable as the earlier two, BERLIN DIARY (1941) and RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH (1960).

Shirer writes a wonderful, exciting memoir of what it was like to be in Europe as Hitler began his rise to power.

As I read, I became aware that Hitler could have been stopped many times before the U.S. became involved. Had the French or the British acted in a timely manner, Hitler could have been squashed like a bug before all the destruction and loss of life. But politics got in the way and everyone seemed afraid to call Hitler on his obvious, transparent lies and bold treaty violations. Churchill had his number, but he was criticized strongly. Everyone believed Hitler's lies, they closed their eyes and allowed him to grow powerful. He bluffed everyone.

I enjoyed the book and found it good reading. Now I am reading Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I recommend The Nightmare Years as a good preface.

One of the most renowned Soviet writers of the twentieth century, Maxim Gorky was an early supporter of the Bolsheviks. He became disillusioned with the turn of events after the 1917 revolution, however, and wrote a series of critical articles for the magazine New Life that eventually caused the new Communist government to close down the publication. Untimely Thoughts is a collection of these articles. It is at once a brilliant analysis of the Russian national character, a condemnation of the Bolshevik methods of government, and a vision of a future in which respect for individual accomplishment replaces the tyranny of the tsars and the brutality of Russian peasant existence. A controversial book, it was not translated into English until 1968 and was not published in the Soviet Union until 1989. The English edition of Untimely Thoughts is now back in print with a new introduction and chronology by Mark D. Steinberg.

Maxim Gorky's untimely thoughts

“Untimely Thoughts” is a collection of articles by Maxim Gorky, the famous Russian writer. He had originally supported the Bolsheviks, but turned against them after the 1917 February revolution. Gorky published his own newspaper, “Novaya Zhizn” (New Life), which expressed the political viewpoints of a Menshevik faction known as the Internationalists. Leaders of this group included A Tikhonov, N Sukhanov and V Desnitsky. I admit that my knowledge of them is scanty at best!

Gorky's paper became notorious when two Bolshevik leaders, Gregory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev, published an article in it, opposing and de facto exposing the coming October revolution, which was then in full preparation. Lenin denounced the article as treasonous, but forgave Zinoviev and Kamenev after the successful revolution (since they both decided to support it at the last moment), giving them high-ranking posts in the new Soviet administration. Stalin, however, didn't forget and used the “Novaya Zhizn” article decades later when he had the two party veterans purged! Apart from this curious episode, Maxim Gorky's newspaper is almost unknown in the West, and this book therefore filled a gap when it was published in 1968. Note that it only contains Gorky's articles, not the more famous piece by Zinoviev and Kamenev. The title “Untimely Thoughts” comes from the name of Gorky's regular column in “Novaya Zhizn”.

Gorky denounces the Bolshevik seizure of power from broadly Menshevik positions. He protests the Bolshevik suppression of dissenting newspapers, the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, but also the Brest-Litovsk peace treaty with Germany. The perspective is unabashedly elitist, with Gorky denouncing “the dark masses” (a Russian derogatory term for the great mass of unskilled workers) and their “animal anarchism”. The skilled workers (what a Bolshevik would call the labor aristocracy) are the real working class. Indeed, the Mensheviks drew most of their support from skilled workers, while Lenin's party mobilized “the dark masses”. Since the labor aristocracy is a small minority, Gorky doesn't believe that socialism is possible in Russia. Neither the anarchic dark masses, nor the non-socialist peasantry, are ready for it. The program is therefore one of parliamentary democracy through the Constituent Assembly, and a gradual cultural uplift of the common people. My impression is that Gorky, like all intellectuals, overestimated the role of his own stratum!

Overall, Gorky's attacks on the Bolsheviks have a peculiar ring. On the one hand, they sound prescient, since, of course, we know exactly what happened later. On the other hand, they also sound rather petty, with the high-brow writer constantly denouncing every incident of violence and theft in Petrograd or Moscow, as if such things could be avoided during a political upheaval in a war-torn and destitute nation like Russia (using the same logic, a Czarist could have denounced the February revolution, which Gorky supported!).

Lenin, of course, wasn't pleased with “Novaya Zhizn”. The last issue of the periodical is dated July 2, 1918. On that day, the Bolshevik government finally suppressed Gorky's newspaper. The Bolsheviks accused “Novaya Zhizn” of being counter-revolutionary, claiming that it had expressed support for Admiral Kolchak's insurgent movement in Siberia. At this point, some Menshevik factions were indeed collaborating with Kolchak. However, “Novaya Zhizn” seems not to have done so, suggesting that there were other reasons behind the suppression. Gorky's sharp pen, perhaps?

The mercurial Gorky left Soviet Russia in 1921, but returned in 1932 at the invitation of Stalin. The former anti-Bolshevik firebrand now became associated with “socialist realism” and other Stalinist politics. He died a Soviet citizen of good standing in 1936 (unless, of course, he was poisoned on Stalin's orders, an oft-repeated rumor). Gorky's curious career – from pro-Bolshevik to anti-Bolshevik to pro-Stalinist – became a source of embarrassment for his official Soviet hagiographers, who suppressed his articles in “Novaya Zhizn” or blatantly falsified their contents, for instance by turning an attack on Lenin into a tribute to the man! George Orwell would have been pleased.

It seems Maxim Gorky's thought are permanently untimely.

Gorky certainly had the moxie to stand up to Lenin and the Bolsheviks. He took them to task whenever he felt they had crossed over into anti-democratic behavior and called a coup a coup. He tends to confuse culture with fine arts as he bemoans the coarsening of the public character and the loss of social refinement..one can see why Lenin shut down his paper. A mixed bag...courageous in his assessment of events but politically naive in his reliance on the basic "goodness" of the Russian people to overcome determined and fairly ruthless political operatives. In the end they did in his democracy and in the end he ended his self-imposed exile and returned to Stalin's Soviet Union...knowing that compromises the validity of his criticisms.

WILLIAM BEIK is professor of history at Emory University. An authority on the social and institutional history of seventeenth-century France, he is the author of Abolutism and Society: State Power and Provincial Aristocracy in Languedoc (1985), which won the 1986 Herbert Baxter Adams Prize of the American Historical Association, and of Urban Protest in Seventeenth-Century France: the Culture of Retribution (1987). He has written numerous articles and is coeditor of the New Approaches to European History series at Cambridge University Press.

I would recommend this book

The central argument seems to be that - absolutism didn’t exist in practice. Which I didn't consider particularly remarkable argument, as often theory falls short of practice.
It appears that the notional loyalty to King (as an absolute ruler) was already established. The book instead charts the efforts to overcome the practical obstacle to the Kings theoretical authority.
There is a focus on the early reforms of Louis XIV.
With original documents the quality of the evidence is very strong, and has incidental value on other points. Notably among the original document was Louise XIV letter to his son on ruling. For someone seeking an academic understanding of the Ancien Regime, I would recommend this book.

For a casual reading, most original documents are easy to read letters/diary entries about some interesting event the author wishes to provide insight into.

Comprehensive book with interseting documents

This books is not a traditional textbook. The author tells you about a certain situation or topic than provides primary documents from various sources showing different sides to that situation (Reformation in the Provinces, Religion, Managing France, The Aristocracy, etc). It's nice to get the eyewitness accounts of the events instead of just having the author tell you about them.
