Because my questions made Amir uncomfortable, he pronounced talaq just like that on the wife who had abandoned everything for him because his religion gives him that privilege. Where do I now stand, sir? Do you have any solutions for me?' Lakshmi, a rebellious, free-spirited and intelligent film-maker, breaks ties with her staunchly Gandhi an father to marry Amir, the man she loves. She even agrees reluctantly to Amir's request that she convert to Islam, as a formality and change her name to Razia. However, she is shocked to discover that her husband is not the open-minded, progressive individual he claimed to be. For after marriage, Amir takes his family's side in trying to force her to follow the more rigorous tenets of their faith. This sets her off on a personal journey into India's history to uncover the many layers of religion, caste and creed. Her quest leads her to the many parallels in the narratives between the past and the present and she gradually finds that though much has changed in Indian society over the centuries, much remains the same. The second historical novel by celebrated Kannada author S.L. Bhyrappa, translated for the first time into English by Sandeep Balakrishna, Aavarana: The Veil raises pertinent and searching questions about religion, liberalism and identity and highlights the importance of unshackling oneself from the bonds of false knowledge.

Good novel, but lacks depth.
By NMS
I have read the book in Kannada. The novel has two layers. In the first layer, a 21st century story, the characters are somewhat weak and predictable. If someone falls in love with this book, it would be due to its second layer that contains a fictional story during mughal period. I would have liked the book more, if it had only the second layer.
The biggest disappointment for me was that the author shamelessly paints religious and casteist bigotry all over the book. The same content could have been presented with more critical and in-depth thoughts. Also, a few times he sounds like someone who cant take criticism from the opposite faction (liberal Hindus).
For all those who love history+suspense, this is a good book. But there are much better ones, like the novels by K N Ganeshaiah. Ganeshaiah is much better than Bhyrappa (in history+fiction) because he uses historical facts to grow the story beyond all these human created religions/castes. Bhyrappa classifies religions/castes as superior, cruel etc in this book, while Ganeshaiah talks about the evolution of religions and gods! (like Shivaram Karanth).

A book which would leave you sad, angry & helpless
By RBK
Aavarana - The Veil : A book which would leave you sad, angry & helpless just like the story’s protagonist and protagonist of the story inside the story.
S.L.Bhyrappa’s uses the historical fiction genre taking us back to Mughal Badshah Aurangazeeb’s time to expose the historical truths of how life of Hindus was under the tyrant(ironically there is an Aurangazeed Road in Delhi which is like having a Hitler road in Jerusalem). There some uncomfortable truths about ghastliness of Islamic violence(and it’s theological basis). He anticipated the responses the book would get from the self-proclaimed progressive secular intellectuals and has expressed those through various characters and incidents in the book. And exactly as he had expected and written, the reviews from the Progressive Marxist cabal came in - damaging the “social fabric”, filled with “communal hatred”, “RSS propaganda”, etc. Those who could not criticize the book on its historical facts(like UR Ananthamurthy & the likes) criticized the book’s literary style and heaped personal attacks on Bhrayappa(this too he had anticipated and the book written by the story's protagonist receives a similar review in the story).
Sandeep Balakrishna has done an excellent job with the English translation making the story gripping and the book unputdownable.
This book could serve as a mild introduction to the works of Ram Swaroop, S.R.Goel, Koenraad Elst, & Arun Shourie(Communal Historians ;-) ).
This is a must read of everyone who want to get started with the pursuit of truth.

Absolute Must read
By Madan Acharya
Outstanding, engaging, incredibly stimulating intellectually as well as morally. SL Bhyrappa has established himself as a fabulous story teller - his technique of weaving stories within stories and relaying timelines with current events is simply brilliant. He has tackled the issues of religious conflict in India over centuries with a greater ease than any other contemporary Indian writer - all this while being unbiased and basing his novel of historic truths. The greater purpose of art is to reveal a truth and SL Bhyrappa has achieved that in his novel. It doesnt matter how much the "secular" historians criticize him, his work will go down in contemporary Indian literature as one of the best even though the mainstream media fails to acknowledge his crucial contributions.
