old classic, still relevant today

this book gives a brief overciew of the history of algorithmic composition before embarking on a scheme devised by the author. the path followed in the book is good at introducing the reletively novice algorithmic composer to the different techniques needed. as far as I can tell, this book is still one of the best available on the subject.
the down side is that the code examples are done in the lisp programming language, which is cryptic at best, and not widely used anymore.
