I have read all of L.M. (Lee) Jackson's books, fiction as well as nonfiction. His mysteries never fail to cast an authentic spell, reproducing Victorian London in all its grandeur and ugliness. The Mesmerist's Apprentice is the second in Jackson's newest series. Sarah Tanner, the central character, is a most attractive heroine. Clever and independent, she has little in the way of resources other than her wits, but she is a survivor and her wits prove to be enough. In this book, her inquisitive nature and loyalty to friends in need take her into the shadowy world of 19th century spiritualism and the occult. For those who enjoy a lively read, I highly recommend!

A fascinating trip to Victorian London

I actually had the pleasure of reading this novel while I was in London! This is a well-written, gripping novel about Victorian London. Loaded with details which create a backdrop of the darker side of Victorian London, this well-plotted novel follows Sarah Tanner, beautiful tea shop owner and former mistress of recently wed Arthur DeSalle, an elite member of society. The two become embroiled in a complex battle with murderous thugs and a crafty and unscrupulous doctor who promises relief from pain and disease through mesmerism.

This fast-paced complex novel should be pure joy for anyone who enjoys period mysteries.

To The Point and Informative

This book is well worth it to anyone serious about learning to tame the Windows beast. The jargon is kept to a minimum and the author gives excellent analogies to help the non-technical grasp the content. Full of useful techniques and lists all CMD commands, even the ones not listed in the command shell. The only reason it did not get 5 stars from me is because of the bulkiness of the book. Weighing in at 815 pgs. including index, I feel the author could have condensed the content, however, it was probably done for the sake of clarity. Great as a tutorial, reference, and brick after you're done!

Completing a doctorate in Business Psychology (2001), Marilynn has shifted her emphasis to intuitive understanding of the personal voice of nursing through reflective practice and the creation of harmony within leadership and work groups. A graduate of the University of Northern Colorado (Greeley, BSN), Marilynn then received her MA in Management and Organizational Behavior from the University of Phoenix. Writer of numerous articles and award winning books, Marilynn has focused on the concepts of delegation, critical thinking and outcomes-based care and more recently on the difficulties in the relationships of physicians and nurses. Residing in Kailof, AK, Marilynn serves as graduate faculty for the University of Phoenix Online Campus. LOVE. This. Book!

OMG!!!!!! I wish I would have found this at the beginning of my nursing program. I'll be using this as my wingman when I go to clinicals in future classes. Can't believe a book so tiny is packed with so much info. Everything in the book is needed info. Doesn't contain fluff. Marilynn Jackson this is perfect!!!

Great Parody!

If you don't like parodies then I wouldn't suggest you buying this book. If you believe Jane Austen is the pinnacle of great classical literature then please do not buy this book!

But if you enjoy seeing a classic novel changed and reconstructed to the point where the undead are brought into a particular time in England then you will enjoy this novella. It is a quick and belly-achingly hilarious read. I found myself laughing out loud at times (much to the chagrin of various family members who assumed I'd lost all my marbles and then some).

Ms. Jones has a knack for making terrific parodies and if you enjoyed Romance Novel and Melvin the Dry Cleaning Zombie and Vampire Shoe Warehouse then you will absolutely positively enjoy this book. Kudos, Ms. Jones: this is my favorite parody yet that you've created.

A Clever Parody from a talented writer!

Every now and then, I just want to read a book and laugh. I was never all that crazy about Jane Austen growing up and yes, I have seen more versions of the film/television series, Pride and Prejudice to count. This version, Pride & Prejudice, is actually quite cute.

However, the moment vampires become involved, you can throw that old Austen version out of the window and prepare to laugh yourself silly. Think of the original story and then spin it around one hundred and eighty degrees. The book is short, sweet and just long enough to tickle your funny bone but not too long to the point where you start rolling your eyes.

I look forward to reading other parodies by this author as she has definitely raised my interest in Jane Austen. Imagine what she could do with some of her other literary works. Perhaps a version of Emma (Dover Thrift Editions) being chased by zombies? Or what about Mansfield Park with werewolves? There are countless ways to entertain and breathe new life into these novels and I have a feeling if anyone can do it, Ms. Jones has it in spades and then some.

OMG, this book is a riot. Can't say I've laughed as hard as I am while reading this one. Of course my sense of humor is a little coarse at times. On top of it, the book is well written and edited.

Confidence Men and Painted Women: A Study of Middle-class Culture in America, 1830-1870

I haven't gotten finished with this book yet because I bought it for a college English class that hasn't started yet. I was trying to get a head start on it all. The book arrived in great condition and quickly, and so far, seems to be a pretty good read.

A Great 19th Century U.S. Social History

In Confidence Men and Painted Women, USC historian Karen Halttunen examines the social norms of middle class Americans from the years 1830-1870. She shows that for much of the nineteenth century, Americans viewed hypocrisy as a direct threat to the democratic process. They considered insincerity a "symbolic expression of moral and political decay in America." The possibility of upward or downward social mobility prompted this identity crisis for many middle class Americans. In their desire to appear sincere, urban Americans looked to identify themselves in opposition to confidence men and painted women. Confidence men were familiar figures in 19th century literature; these outwardly friendly men often corrupted young city newcomers. Painted women resided in parlor rooms; their use of makeup disguised the proof of insincere lifestyle. Both figures represented insincerity in domestic and social spheres. There was a fine line between proper attire and the insincere looks of fashion.

Both men and women strove for sincerity in their appearance. In doing so, there arose an inherent contradiction to the ideals of 19th century behavior manuals: namely, that by focusing on the correct attire and etiquette to appear sincere renders the participant insincere. The rest of Halttunen's book looks at society's recognition of this contradiction, the practice of sincere outward appearances in parlor rooms, on the street, and even at funerals. She concludes that ultimately public appearance reconciled with personal insincerity. In short, by the Gilded Age, Americans had not only made peace with the division between ostensible outward appearance and supposed internal sincerity, but had learned to accept this contradiction as a social norm.

A very worthwhile read

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of American middle class culture between 1830-1870. Well-researched, well written, and fun to read, I thought it was a great lesson in American civilization, and I also appreciated all of the references to popular culture during that time. The author begins the book with an arresting premise and follows through beautifully. A must read for anyone interested in broadening their base of historical knowledge.

She has extensive experience in multiple industries―from microelectronics to heavy equipment manufacturing, medical, legal, and retail―using software to implement BI and CPM solutions. Diane currently works for Strafford Technology, LLC creating a data warehouse using SQL Server 2012. In 2010, she worked for El Camino Hospital, where she created a data warehouse and data marts to feed QlikView. Diane and her husband, Bob, moved from Chicago to Albuquerque in June, 2012. She wrote a QlikView recipe book entitled Instant QlikView 11 Application Development for Packt Publishing in 2013. Diane has also written biographical encyclopedia articles on several known personalities, including Charles Babbage, Erving Goffman, and Isaac Asimov.

Packt-standard subpar quality

My first encounter with the author's oeuvre was "QlikView 11 Application Development" - boasting a total of 60 pages. I dismissed the book sight unseen, pointing potential readers to two superior, varied choices: the thin, popular book by Pover, and the heavy de-facto-QlikView-bible by Garcia and Harmsen. Reviewers who did give it a chance were not impressed, complaining about missing files and confusing directions.

I suspect that "QlikView for Finance" will be getting more of the same: I am looking at page 5, and already (in the last line) the author is asking the reader to build a QlikView table - but is not telling how! Running through vignettes should be easy on an author: Blackwood is not doing that to a high standard, and does not aspire for anything higher-value-added. I am not going to dismiss "QlikView for Finance": let a thousand flowers bloom, the book may find a grateful reader. That said, Pover's still looks like a better deal to me - and now there is another appealing alternative, "QlikView Your Business" by Troyansky et al. Do not be swayed by the title's reference to finance - that's a marketing gimmick and a non-factor.

PS. Revisited Qlik Sense recently and ... lost an hour's work due to "Failed to get app because there is no app loaded" error - meaning a permanently corrupted Qlik Sense file. Google the error message and see the "happened to me too!" sobs of other developers, and silence from Qlik Sense staff. Tableau all the way!

PPS. Oops, well, maybe not all the way after all. I had a brush with Tableau certification recently - a person, not an exam - and that was just awful, an unpleasant mix of incompetence and wrong attitude. I have had a chance to observe how Qlik's customer service dealt with a similar situation, and they scored head and shoulders above their competition. It's not all about the product.

When I got this book I was looking for the excitement to know why Yolanda Saldivar kill the lovely Selena. I did have high hopes, but it didn't work. The author sympathize with the killer and she talks about a secret that she's not planning to reveal. What a way to fool a reader. I love Selena and reading about all the negatives that the killer tells the author is awful. What a shame!

Useful in Groups

I have used a number of the Interpretation series for study with older high schoolers and adults. As indicated in their description they contain "ten units on key passages". They are not to be mistaken for a comprehensive Bible Commentary which covers each chapter and verse - this is not their purpose. I love the fact that this material is thought provoking and is intended to provide openings for dialogue - but then I'm an Episcopalian and not keen on being force fed. I particularly like the information in the side-bars that links the scripture to cultural practices of the day, differing Greek translations of a word, further reading, etc. This series contains a down loadable teacher's guide that is also useful.
