Growing up in the Bronx in the shadow of the Throgs Neck Bridge, Larry Lawton was an altar boy until the day he was sexually molested by a priest. Needing to prove his manhood, Lawton as a teen began a criminal career taking bets on football games. He hung out at local bars, was embraced by mobsters, and soon became an earner and enforcer for the Gambino crime family.
After a young thug made the mistakes of robbing a member of Lawton s gang, Lawton took him into the basement of the mob bar and told the thug that if he didn t tell him where the money was, he was going to be sorry. The thug finally talked, but not before Lawton left the imprint of a scalding-hot iron on his chest. Lawton was ordered by his superiors to rob a jewelry store in Florida. The owner, who sought to collect insurance on his losses, was in on it. The robbery made Lawton a small fortune, and for the next six years he pulled off heist after heist up and down the East Coast, frustrating the police and the FBI.
After six years he was caught, and sentenced to four twelve year sentences to run concurrently in some of America s most brutal prisons. He was sent to solitary, tortured by guards, and after he began a letter writing campaign to publicize the brutality of prison life, he was targeted by the warden for further abuse. One day the guards beat him, stripped him naked, strapped him down spread eagle, and urinated on him as punishment. Keep writing, Lawton, said one guard as he walked away. After Lawton served his term, he was asked by a friend to talk to the friend s son, a boy who clearly was headed for a life of crime. Lawton vividly told the boy about what prison life really was about, and after a couple of weeks the boy s father said to Lawton, You ought to make this your life s work. I don t know what you told him, but he s a different kid. Since then Lawton has dedicated his life to working with America s teens and young adults, telling them the truth about prison life, what they will lose, avoiding and dissolving bad associations, helping them to turn their lives around. His program, the nationally recognized Reality Check Program, is used by judges, law enforcement, government officials, attorneys and parents all over the country and has kept thousands of teens and young adults from going to prison. His success rate is incredible and well documented. So is Larry Lawton s story.

Review
As the first-ever Chairman of Florida s Children and Youth Cabinet I have worked with hundreds of children who have made bad choices in life but have so much good to offer the world. This book is an inspiration to anyone who wants to turn their life around. Mr. Lawton s story is inspirational and authentic. He opens his heart and soul to the reader. I highly recommend this must read book. --Jeff Kottkamp Florida s 17th Lt. Governor: Ft. Myers, Florida
There is no more important asset to the state of Florida than our children, and their paths through life are defined by the choices they make, and the guidance they receive along the way. Experience is often the best guide, and we should all look to learn from those who have traveled the path before us. Larry s story is genuine and stirring, and this book can be a fantastic tool for anyone looking to change his or her life for the better. --Dominic M. Calabro President & CEO of Florida TaxWatch
Larry Lawton is a man of many experiences! Larry Lawton is a man of trial and error! Larry Lawton is success! His book Gangster Redemption will have you looking over your shoulder as if he s brought you with him as he describes in detail his life story. Gangster Redemption is all things right and wrong with society today. Larry Lawton is not a man who uses his past as an excuse. He doesn t blame anyone for his past except himself. While he certainly has endured immense trauma throughout his life as you will read in Gangster Redemption , he takes ownership of the life changing decisions and comes out of the fire with an influence for children and adults that is almost incomprehensible. Gangster Redemption is a compilation of action, history, biography and politics that ends with a feel good story with proven positive results. Larry Lawton doesn t tell you what you want to hear, he tells you what you need to hear and you will listen when Larry speaks! --Justin Wasson Golf Professional, Father of one

A must read for judges, law enforcement officers, and jewelry store owners!

In 1988, I read Night, by Elie Wiesel. Wiesel is a survivor of the Holocaust. Gangster Redemption, by Larry Lawton, runs a close second with regard to the abuse of prisoners. Not to compare the American prison system to Nazi death camps - they were established for two different purposes. Obviously, there were far more deaths in the death camps. But the Nazi intention for building death camps is self explanatory. Unfortunately there are still too many similarities. Politically, I'm very conservative - so I'm not exactly coming from a liberal stance. Too often we hear about atrocities in our prison system and take the uncompassionate view of "Well, that's what happens in prison!" or "Serves them right!" NO! That's what happens in foreign prison systems - where there is no constitution that protects the peoples' rights. Read the Eighth Amendment of the US Constitution; for that matter, read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations in 1948. Inmates in US prisons are, indeed, inhabitants of the United States, and therefore have rights - whether we agree or disagree with what happens to inmates. When we hear of people having their rights infringed in the United States, we are supposed to do something about it. That is from where Larry Lawton, in Gangster Redemption, makes his case.
I am a firm believer in the death penalty when the crime warrants it. My kid brother was gunned down by a robber when he was closing his service station in Lexington, Kentucky, on February 6, 1994. While I believe the death penalty was warranted, my brother's assailant was sent to prison for life. Do I believe his assailant is fair-game for abuse by prison guards? Absolutely not! We treat animals at the local pound better than we treat inmates at some of our prisons. Prison shouldn't be a country club, but the punishment should be just and not left to the whimsy of a prison guard or even the warden or jail commander if they cannot stay level-head with the treatment of inmates. Understandably, human beings put into these positions of power are facing huge moral challenges while guarding prisoners. The Stanford Prison Experiment conducted in the summer of 1971 clearly illustrated the pitfalls of our very humanity when placed into positions of authority, one over another. This should not be happening all these years later. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. The Golden Rule is applicable to everyone - prison guards included.
While I am filled with disdain for criminals and the crimes they commit, they are, in fact, still human beings. While in prison, Mr. Lawton developed, through natural instinct, a strong sense of prison sociology and psychology while just trying to stay alive. Larry Lawton has seen, and felt, what it is to be treated worse than any animal. He was, indeed, a criminal - guilty as charged for his robbing lifestyle. But had he actually have had to kill someone just trying to stay alive in prison, he would have been charged with murder. Fortunately, he found ways around that, and gives that credit to God.
Larry Lawton has found God and asked Him for His forgiveness. He has done his time in prison, and now, this former gangster has also charted his redemption - a noble plan to attempt saving the lives of some of America's misguided young people. For that matter - many adults stand to benefit from reading this book. Judges, detectives, and jewelry story owners take heed! Here, there is much to be learned.
